Dorsey selected for fellowship in Germany

Matthew Dorsey, a 2017 chemical engineering graduate, is one of 75 Americans from a pool of more than 600 applicants selected for the 2018-19 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals. During the year-long fellowship, Dorsey will study and work in Germany.

Two graduate students to present at international conference

Abbas Sultan and Laith Sabri, Ph.D. students in chemical engineering, will present their research at the 25th International Conference on Chemical Reaction in Florence, Italy, later this month. Both received travel grants. Dr. Muthanna Al-Dahhan, chair and Curators’ Distinguished Professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, supervises their research.

Rodgers’ research published in molecular phylogenetics journal

The master’s thesis of alumna Rachel Rodgers, ChE’09, was recently accepted for publication in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. Rodgers’ article, “Phylogenomic analysis of Fundulidae (Teleostei: Cyprinodotiformes) using RNA-sequencing Data” is published in the Dec. 28, 2017, issue of the journal.

Girl Scout leads elementary school students in STEM-related activities

Olivia Money, a junior in chemical engineering, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Money got her hands gooey while completing her project to earn the Gold Award. She led a group of third-graders at Sherwood Elementary in Arnold, Missouri, in several science-related workshops, instructing them on making slime and fossils and taught topics like density. Money also created learning materials and activity kits for teachers to use in the coming years. Money said she wanted younger kids, especially girls, to become interested in science.

Chemical engineering poster receives honorary mention

Haider Al-Rubaye, a Ph.D. student in chemical and biochemical engineering, presented a poster at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 2016 annual Sustainability Poster Session in San Francisco on Nov. 16. The poster, “Experimental Investigation on Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor to Maximize the Methane Gas Production in the Biogas,” received an honorary mention.
