Dr. Trent Brown, associate professor of American studies in the English and technical communication department, will be featured on C-SPAN 2’s Book TV this weekend to discuss his recent book Ed King’s Mississippi: Behind the Scenes of Freedom Summer. Lisa Cerney, formerly the business manager of graduate studies, has been promoted to director of budget planning effective Nov. 1. She replaces Carol Heddinghaus, who will retire at the end of the year after 39 years of service to S&T.

Know a student, faculty or staff leader on campus who has gone above and beyond their duties? Nominate them for a winter Student Leadership Award. Leadership and cultural programs will honor six students and one faculty or staff member for outstanding contributions to the campus. Nominations are due by Wednesday, Dec. 2. An awards reception will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8, to celebrate the winners.

Dr. Zelda Zabinsky, professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Washington-Seattle, will be the Bernard Sarchet Graduate Seminar Series Speaker noon-12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Room 260 Toomey Hall. Zabinsky’s lecture, titled “On Beyond LP: Optimization of Complex Systems,” will summarize theoretical results regarding performance of random search algorithms and discuss a new meta-control methodology that adaptively guides an interacting-particle algorithm with a filtering technique.
