Former S&T college dean Russell Buhite dies

Dr. Russell D. Buhite, a professor emeritus of history and political science and a former dean at S&T, died May 27. He was 79. Per his wishes, no memorial service is planned. Before he became an author and a history professor, Buhite was a minor league first baseman and outfielder for the New York Giants, the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Senators. His experiences informed his book, The Continental League.

Prize goes to Pope for essay on fake news in 1700s

Dr. Justin Pope, assistant professor of history and political science, has won The John M. Murrin Prize for the best essay published in Early American Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal in 2017. His winning essay, “Inventing an Indian Slave Conspiracy on Nantucket, 1738,” was published in the Summer 2017 issue. The prize will be presented to Pope at a ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania in May.

Sheppard shines light on first American female Egyptologist

Dr. Kathleen Sheppard, associate professor of history and political science, edited a volume of historical archaeological correspondence. The book, “My Dear Miss Ransom…”: Letters between Caroline Ransom Williams and James Henry Breasted, 1898-1935, chronicles the conversations between the first American female Egyptologist and her colleague.

S&T faculty receive grants for affordable, open educational resources

Six Missouri S&T faculty are working to help students save money on textbooks with grants from the University of Missouri System. The grants are provided through the UM System Affordable & Open Educational Resources (A&OER) initiative. The program encourages faculty experimentation and innovation in finding new, better and less costly ways to deliver learning materials to students. Forty-one faculty members have received the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2016-17. The winners were recognized at a ceremony in November. The Outstanding Teaching Award is given each year to faculty members by the Outstanding Teaching Award committee, which bases its selections on student evaluations.

Fogg heads to Paris as visiting scholar

Dr. Shannon Fogg, chair and professor of history and political science, will serve as a visiting scholar in Paris in January. She will serve at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). The EHESS trains postgraduate students in social sciences.
