Maine cybersecurity expert named computer science chair

Dr. George Markowsky, a computer science professor at the University of Maine with a background in entrepreneurship, international education and cybersecurity research, has been named chair of Missouri S&T’s computer science department. Trish named interim library director

Maggie Trish has been appointed interim director of library and learning resources at the Curtis Laws Wilson Library following the recent retirement of Tracy Primich. The appointment was effective Thursday, June 1. Trish will serve as interim director until a permanent director is hired. A national search is underway for the library director. Open forums scheduled for library director candidates

The campus community is invited to attend open forums for three candidates for the position of director of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library and provide feedback. Candidates and their presentations will include:

  • Jeremy Brown will present at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, in the Meramec-Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.
  • Peggy Mullaly-Quijas will present at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, in the in the Meramec-Gasconade Room of the Havener Center
  • John Furlong will present at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center.

Forciniti named faculty fellow

Dr. Daniel Forciniti, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, has been selected as faculty fellow for the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters in the Missouri S&T provost’s office. He served as faculty fellow during the previous semester and will continue in this role.

Roads to temporary close during excavation blasting

Excavation blasting will begin Thursday, June 8, and occur for approximately two weeks, near I-44 and Kingshighway, at approximately noon each day. The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be block the interstate at exits 186 and 182 at the traffic circle at Kingshighway and I-44 for short periods around noon each day.

Two dining areas reopened

Mathematical Logic I offered this summer

Mathematical Logic I, credited as either Math 5154, Computer Engineering 5803, Computer Science 5203, or Philosophy 4354, will be offered during the summer, starting this week and ending Friday, June 30. Take a break, help homeless

The global learning staff will host an opportunity for you to join a departmental service project 3-5 p.m. in the lobby of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library on the following dates:

  • Monday, June 12
  • Monday, July 10
  • Monday, Aug. 14

Take a “brain break” and stop by to learn about making “plarn” (plastic yarn) from recycled plastic shopping bags, and turning them into sleeping mats for homeless individuals. This is a drop-in event; there are no fees and all supplies will be provided.

Help keep Weight Watchers on campus

Three more members are needed to keep Weight Watchers meetings on Missouri S&T’s campus. If three more individuals join the group, Weight Watchers will give each member in S&T’s group a tote bag of items, valued at $75. The next series of Weight Watchers will begin Tuesday, June 13, and meet noon-1 p.m. on Tuesdays in Room 202 Curtis Laws Wilson Library.
