The learning enhancement across disciplines (LEAD) program provides free walk-in tutoring and faculty-led learning centers in over 60 courses this semester – including all the introductory courses in math, chemistry, physics, and comp sci, and full operation of several more learning centers. You are invited to attend S&T’s Service Learning Symposium 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in St. Pat’s Ballroom C of the Havener Center on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The event will provide an array of ideas about the benefits of service learning for you and your students. Two new practical workshops are designed to help instructors incorporate service learning into their courses: “Intro to Service Learning” and “How to Add Service Learning to Your Course.”

First Amendment discussion planned tonight

The Office of Equity and Title IX will host a panel discussion on the First Amendment at 6 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 17) in Room 199 Toomey Hall. Join the discussion on freedom of speech, know your rights and how they affect how we live, learn and work. Attendees will receive free pocket Constitutions. Guest panelists include:

  • David Steelman, chair of the University of Missouri Board of Curators and senior partner at Steelman, Gaunt and Horsefield in Rolla
  • Bob Jerry, law professor at the University of Missouri School of Law
  • Karen Aroesty, regional director of Anti-Defamation League Heartland
  • Representatives from political parties active in Missouri

Learn about the latest happenings on campus on calendar.mst.edu, Missouri S&T’s official events calendar. Adding an event is simple; click the orange “submit an event” button. You’ll be asked to sign in with your university ID and password and then you can include the time, date and other details about the S&T event that you’d like people to attend. The calendar is published in several places on Missouri S&T’s website and feeds to the main website.

Volunteers sought for Celebration of Nations

More than 4,000 visitors are expected at S&T’s Celebration of Nations multicultural festival Saturday, Sept. 29, in downtown Rolla. Volunteers play a crucial role in the event and are needed for various tasks. Individuals who volunteer for four hours or more will receive a free Celebration of Nations T-shirt. Look to the skies tonight for fireworks, Saturn

Turn your eyes upward for two separate S&T events tonight (Monday, Sept. 17). First, watch fireworks at 8 p.m. from Havener Center’s lawn as part of the Research and Technology Development conference block party. Next, check out Saturn during an observatory open house at 9 p.m. To allow for the fireworks, parking lot M-36, located near McNutt Hall, will close at 3 p.m. today. All vehicles must be moved out of the lot by 5 p.m.
