Southwinds, S&T’s creative arts magazine, announces its annual fall contest, open to all students, faculty and staff. Suggested themes, though not required, are mystery, justice and tension, although your creative work does not need to fit into those themes. Please submit your poems, photographs, stories and artwork to swinds@mst.edu by Sunday, Nov. 5. Participants are eligible to win prizes and priority consideration in the magazine.

Retirement reception planned for Dr. Kent Wray

The campus community is invited to a retirement reception honoring Dr. Warren K. (Kent) Wray 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in St. Pat’s C of the Havener Center. The theme will be “Around the World with Kent Wray Retirement Tour.” A short program will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Former engineering management chair Henry Sineath dies

Dr. Henry “Dr. Si” Sineath, a retired S&T faculty member and longtime Rolla resident, died Oct. 8, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was 95. After 25 years in industry, Sineath joined Missouri S&T in 1976 as a visiting professor of engineering management. During his tenure at S&T, he established the university’s packaging program, served as its director and endowed a fund to provide continued support for the program. In 1981, Sineath became the second chair of engineering management, following founding department chair Dr. Bernard Sarchet. He retired as professor emeritus in 1986.

Physical defense for women classes start Oct. 21

University Police is offering rape, aggression, defense (R.A.D.) training for women. The classes are free for Missouri S&T students, employees and dependents of employees. Classes will be held 8-11 a.m. Sundays, Oct. 21, Oct. 28, Nov. 4 and Nov. 11, in the Student Recreation Center in the Gale Bullman Building. Participants must attend each of the four sessions in the 12-hour course. Class size is limited to 15.

Get help with your research proposal

Faculty members are invited to meet with research mentors from various disciplines to get feedback on their research proposals during faculty proposal mentoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester. Participants can sign up for a 30-minute slot starting at 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. in Room 305 McNutt Hall on Tuesdays and in Room 118 Fulton Hall on Thursdays. The deadline to sign up is the Friday of the previous week. Please bring a proposal idea and one-page statement about your work to share with mentors.

Annual enrollment planned Oct. 16-27

Annual Enrollment is your yearly opportunity to decide which insurance works best for you. It will open Monday, Oct. 16. All benefit-eligible employees must enroll or waive coverage by Friday, Oct. 27. If you fail to take action, you will default to the Healthy Savings Plan at the non-discounted rate, and pay taxes on your monthly premiums.

Faculty, staff needed to mentor first-generation students

Student diversity initiatives seeks faculty and staff mentors for the Trailblazers program for first-generation students. Mentors should be passionate about supporting undergraduate first-generation students and willing to devote time to meet with mentees monthly to form a mentoring relationship.
