S&T student, Rolla teacher blasting off for space symposium
The Space Foundation selected Marisa Tompkins and Amanda Almany as two of 31 teacher liaisons to attend the 34th Annual Space Symposium in April in Colorado Springs. Tompkins is a senior at Missouri S&T from Pomona, Missouri. She is a multidisciplinary studies major with an emphasis in elementary education. Almany is a fifth-grade teacher at Rolla Middle School and one of Missouri S&T’s cooperating teachers for student field experiences at the elementary level.

AACSB is the world’s longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools and programs.

The IEEE Computer Society has selected Dr. Bruce McMillin for its Distinguished Visitors Program. McMillin is the associate dean for research and external relations in the College of Engineering and Computing and a professor of computer science.

The chemical engineering department awarded three students with the Distinguished Dissertation Award. Recipients for the Fall 2017 semester are: Harshul Thakkar, Zeyu Shang and Ibrahim Said. This award is given to Ph.D. students who publish three or more papers as first author before graduating.

Dr. Lesley Sneed, associate professor and Stirrat Faculty Scholar in civil, architectural and environmental engineering, has been appointed to the International Editorial Board of the Journal of Composites for Construction. The journal is an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) publication. It features original research papers, review papers and case studies on the use of fiber-reinforced composite materials in construction.

Dr. Suzanna Long, chair and professor of engineering management and systems engineering, has been elected to a three-year term as technical vice president for the Institute for Industrial & Systems Engineers. She has previously held several offices for IISE sub-societies. Her term as technical vice president will begin Sunday, April 1.
