Twenty-seven Missouri S&T faculty members were honored for excellence and achievement in research, service and teaching during an awards ceremony Feb. 13 on campus. Each award winner received a monetary stipend funded by industry and alumni contributions.

The Faculty Excellence Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated sustained excellence teaching, research and service. The 2017 Faculty Excellence Award was presented to:

• Mohamed ElGawady, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering
• Jie Gao, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
• Julia Medvedeva, professor of physics
• Kathryn Northcut, professor of English and technical communication.

The Faculty Achievement Award recognizes non-regular faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in either teaching, research or service. The 2017 Faculty Achievement was presented to:

• Rohit Dua, associate teaching professor of electrical and computer engineering
• F. Scott Miller, teaching professor of metallurgical engineering
• Terry Robertson, associate teaching professor of speech and media studies
• Katie Shannon, associate teaching professor of biological sciences.

The Faculty Research Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship.  Awards are given based on the significance of the contributions of the individual in the preceding two years, as well as the long-term impact of the individual’s research. The 2017 Faculty Research Award was presented to:

• Douglas Bristow, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
• Jun Fan, professor of electrical and computer engineering
• Stephen Gao, professor of geology and geophysics
• Tseggai Isaac, professor of history and political science
• Sanjay Madria, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of computer science
• Manashi Nath, associate professor of chemistry
• Heng Pan, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
• Zhaozheng Yin, associate professor of computer science
• Joseph Newkirk, professor of metallurgical engineering.

The Faculty Service Award recognizes faculty members who display exemplary, sustained service to the university and their profession. The 2017 Faculty Service Award was presented to:

• Kristen Donnell, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering
• Dev Niyogi, associate professor of biological sciences
• Klaus Woelk, associate professor of chemistry.

The Faculty Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching-related activities. The 2017 Faculty Teaching Award was presented to:

• Elizabeth Cudney, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering
• Ralph Flori, associate professor of petroleum engineering
• Ronald Frank, associate professor of biological sciences
• Irina Ivliyeva, associate professor of Russian
• Jennifer Leopold, associate professor of computer science
• Henry Pernicka, professor of aerospace engineering
• R. Joe Stanley, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering
• Klaus Woelk, associate professor of chemistry.
