Instructors are invited to the workshop “Team Alchemy: How to Assess Teams” with guest presenter Dr. Holly Stretz noon-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Room 208 Norwood Hall. Stretz is an associate professor of chemical engineering at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. She will discuss Team Alchemy, a professional organization for industry team assessment and development, and why Tennessee Tech chose this system for their academic and student teams.

Video competition focuses on active learning

Do you incorporate active learning techniques into your classroom? If so, submit a video up to 2 minutes long that showcases active learning techniques. Prizes will be awarded for the top three videos. The top three videos will be showcased at the Teaching and Learning Technology Conference, to be held March 16-17 on campus. The contest is open to all instructors. The deadline for video submissions is Wednesday, March 1. Submit your video.

RESPOND program set for March 16

Counseling, disability support and student wellness (CDSW) will offer an encore presentation of RESPOND 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, in St. Pat’s A Ballroom of the Havener Center. The program, licensed by the University of Missouri System, is designed to train students, faculty and staff on how to recognize and provide initial assistance to people with mental health concerns. The RESPOND program was developed by Dr. Christy Hutton, assistant director for outreach and prevention in counseling services at the University of Missouri-Columbia, with the support of the UM System Board of Curators. It has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from our S&T community.

Etiquette dinner planned March 8

Career opportunities and employer relations (COER) will host a five-course dinner 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, in St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. The etiquette dinner is designed to teach students about proper dining etiquette and prepare them for dining with potential employers. The cost for students is $15 to cover partial costs of the meal, with COER paying half the meal costs. Please encourage interested students to RSVP online by Wednesday, March 1.

Lusk named to national committee studying links between coal, health

Dr. Braden Lusk, chair and professor of mining and nuclear engineering, was recently named to the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Committee on Surface Coal and Human Health. The committee will conduct a study to examine the potential relationship between increased health risks and living in proximity to sites that have been or are being mined or reclaimed for surface coal deposits. Last November, Lusk was appointed to another NASEM committee to study occupational exposure to coal dust in underground mines.

Oerther selected to attend 2017 Fulbright alumni conference

Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of State Alumni Thematic International Exchange Seminar (Alum TIES) titled “The New Frontiers of Global Public Health.” The conference will be held Feb. 8-11 at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

Zaeem named international scholar by materials societies

Dr. Mohsen Asle Zaeem, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, has been named the Young Leaders International Scholar by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) and the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS). TMS is a professional society that connects minerals, metals and materials scientists and engineers who work in industry, academia and government positions around the world.
