Dr. Richard D. Woods, National Academy of Engineering member and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan, will present “Geotechnical Impact of High Energy Construction Operations on Nearby Infrastructure” at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, May 18, in Room 125 Butler-Carlton Hall. Woods’ presentation will be the inaugural lecture in the Shamsher and Sally Prakash Distinguished Lecture Series in Geotechnical Engineering. The lecture is free and open to the public, but will also serve as the keynote address for the 2017 GeoMO Conference. To help raise awareness of cystic fibrosis, Friday, May 19, is “Jeans for Genes Day.” For a $5 donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, you can wear jeans and get a sticker to help raise awareness for this condition that affects approximately 30,000 U.S. individuals. While there is no cure, great strides have been made into research to help extend and improve the lives of patients with cystic fibrosis. They will visit areas on May 19 to pick up donations and hand out stickers.

The employee eConnection will move to its summer schedule starting Wednesday, May 24, through the start of the fall semester. Nearly 1,200 Missouri S&T students will be awarded degrees during two commencement ceremonies at the Gale Bullman Building on Saturday, May 13. If you are attending a ceremony, make sure you have the latest event details, available at registrar.mst.edu/commencement/. Plans have changed from previous years and each ceremony will now include all students from a given department in the same ceremony. Freshmen engineering students recently cast their votes for their favorite teacher. Paul Runnion, assistant teaching professor of mathematics and statistics, received the Freshman Engineering Program’s “We Love Your Class” award for the 2016-17 academic year. The FedEx Express drop-off box that is currently located on the north side of Parker Hall will be moved today, Thursday, May 11, to the west of its current location, putting it closer to Parker Hall’s north entrance doors. The box will be moved due to a foundation stabilization and fiscal services renovation project at the building.
