Staff scholarship program available for employees

Missouri S&T’s Staff Council offers a scholarship program to assist staff members who are furthering their education. Through the program, full-time S&T employees enrolled in at least one class at Missouri S&T or another University of Missouri System campus can apply for a $250 scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded twice each year, for the spring and fall semesters. The deadline for the spring semester is Wednesday, Nov. 1. Missouri S&T’s scholarships are funded by proceeds from Staff Council’s yearly food auction on Staff Day as well as individual donations. MAE graduate seminar planned today

The mechanical and aerospace engineering department and the Academy of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers will host a presentation by Dr. Swati Saxena 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in Room 140 Toomey Hall. Her presentation is titled “High-Pressure Compressor Modeling for Inclement Weather Applications.” Saxena is a project manager in research and development at ESI United States in San Jose, California.

See Saturn from S&T observatory tonight

The Missouri S&T Observatory will open its doors at 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, for viewing Saturn and its rings. The observatory is located at 1550 N. Bishop Ave., next to S&T’s Stonehenge replica, north of McNutt Hall and west of St. Patrick’s Lane. The sky must be clear for observing and session length will vary.

New dining areas opening in Havener Center

Missouri S&T’s new dining locations in Havener Center are near completion. Opening today (Monday, Aug. 21) are Mondo Subs, Rustic Range, Sono, The Kitchen and Build, which offers pizza cooked in a stone oven. Einstein Bros. Bagels, near the food court, is open today. Chick-fil-A will open at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, allowing time to complete finishing touches. Brand symposium registration now open

 Registration is now open for the second annual S&T Brand Symposium, which will be held Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Havener Center. This free event is an annual meeting of S&T leaders and communicators. Participants will hear from experts and get connected to the university’s vision for marketing and branding. Morning sessions and lunch are open to all who register at brand.mst.edu/brandsymposium. This year’s event will also feature a few hands-on workshops during the afternoon. Room change planned for faculty forum

The Early Career Faculty Forum, which will be held 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, is now scheduled for 203 Curtis Laws Wilson Library instead of Room 204. Refreshments and time for networking will be available at 3:45 p.m. This is the first year the forum has been extended to include pre-tenure and early career faculty. Finding a mentor is the topic.

Lake Spring event this weekend to feature rover design team

The Missouri S&T Mars Rover Design Team will be featured at a pre-eclipse event at the Lake Spring Post Office 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19. The post office is located at 100 State Route 72 in Lake Spring, Missouri. The event also will include chemistry demonstrations, a presentation about the solar eclipse and the unveiling of an eclipse cancellation stamp. All activities are free and open to the public, with the exception of a barbecue lunch, which costs $5 per person. For once in your lifetime … see historic solar eclipse

Join your fellow colleagues to witness a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse on the Havener Center lawn Monday, Aug. 21. The university will welcome campus and community members to observe the event 11 a.m.-3 p.m. outside Havener. The maximum eclipse, with 99.8 percent of the sun obscured, is expected to begin at 1:15 p.m.
