The 2008 Opening Week was a success, thanks to the cooperative efforts of the numerous faculty, staff and students who participated. New student programs thanks everyone for their involvement and dedication to our students during orientation.

Developing early relationships with other students, staff and faculty is instrumental in helping new students make a successful transition to college life. Opening Week also establishes realistic academic expectations for our new students and provides programs that promote academic success. “We appreciate your support and look forward to working with you in 2008,” says Patty Frisbee, director of new student programs.

The 120 participants from 19 countries represented in the Tour of Missouri will include Christian Vandewelde, who finished in fifth place in the 2008 Tour de France. Beginning Sept. 8, the program will meet from noon–1:30 p.m. on Mondays in Room 103 of the Engineering Management Building (note the change in location from the previous announcement). A $40 materials fee, which will be collected on the first day of class, includes CDs and books. Those who attend nine of 10 classes will receive a $20 refund. To enroll, contact Jerry Parmeley at parmeleyj@umsystem.edu.

The game will start at 7 p.m., at Davis Field on the Central Methodist campus. The game could not be played at Truman's Stokes Stadium as construction delays will not allow for the completion of the project in time for the scheduled date of the contest.

Tingzhi Su, an exchange student from Tongji University in Shanghai, China, successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation last week via the web. Representatives from Missouri S&T and Tongji University judged her research and presentation performance at the same time using our distance learning facilities. Su is the first student from Tongji University to use this method.

Su will receive a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Tongji University. Her research was supervised by Dr. Jianmin Wang, assistant professor in civil, architectural and environmental engineering. Su’s research focused on the removal of toxic elements from drinking water.

Su will continue her studies at S&T to pursue an additional Ph.D. in civil engineering, also supervised by Wang. A second exchange student from Tongji University, Yulin Tang, is also completing his Ph.D. research in Wang’s lab.

Last year our campus bought almost 10 million sheets of paper. Last month 45,000 pages were printed
in our computer learning centers. How can we reduce these numbers? Environmental health and safety suggests you first, set department printers to a duplex default. Second, consider the environment before you print.

Missouri S&T’s Environmental Management System (EMS) is based on continual improvement. Our goal is to reduce paper usage by 40 percent by the end of the year. You can help.

Remember, print less, duplex often. More information about our paper reduction efforts will be available in the coming weeks. Help do your part to make Missouri S&T “green”.

The Tour of Missouri cycling event will finish in front of Castleman Hall at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The race circuit will consist of three laps in a figure eight through the downtown area.

Make plans now to view this exciting event. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 spectators will be present to view the event in Rolla. Automobile travel and parking around campus will be affected. University parking lots 22 (across State Street from the Chancellor’s Residence) and 13 (Havener Center) will be closed on Sept. 11. All items must be clean and ready to wear at the time of donation. Contact Nancy at 341-4229 for pick-up or drop off donations to the COC at 304 Norwood Hall.

Missouri S&T is now a member of The TLT Group, a non-profit corporation committed to improving teaching and learning through the use of technology, especially in higher education. Around 140 other peer institutions, including the University of Missouri-St. Louis, are also members.

Among the benefits our campus receives is access to The TLT Group’s Flashlight Online web-based surveys, developed by authors at other institutions. Instructors on this campus will have the ability to contribute to the survey question pool and adapt questions to suit their needs. For more information about this and other resources available from The TLT Group, contact educational technology at edtech@mst.edu or visit EdTech Connect.
