Check out student art, attend awards ceremony tonight

The Havener Center will soon display more than 100 unique pieces of art created by students in art appreciation, drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art and photography classes. Enjoy refreshments and music and vote for the “best of show” winner during an opening reception 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the Havener Center. At 6 p.m., join the arts, languages and philosophy department for the Renaissance Student Award presentation and ALPY awards ceremony, which will include awards in film, French and Russian.

Sleep next topic on tap in lecture series

When we don’t get enough sleep, we may have a hard time thinking, be cranky and  slowly damage our bodies, which can lead to health problems like diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Dr. Matthew Thimgan, assistant professor of biological sciences, will talk about sleep at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the next “Research on Tap” lecture on the second-floor loft of Public House Brewing Co. in Rolla. The talk begins at 6:30 p.m. but please arrive early to grab a seat and maybe a drink.

CASB dean helps kick off ‘Year of the Bird’

Dr. Stephen Roberts, vice provost and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business, will help the Ozark River Audubon Chapter kick off the 2018 Year of the Bird — a joint, yearlong effort from the National Audubon Society, National Geographic, BirdLife International and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In a talk for a general audience, Roberts will discuss birding and wildlife encounters from the deserts, jungles and polar regions. All are invited to the event at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Eugene E. Northern Community Hall, located at 400 W. 4th St. in Rolla.

Get help with your research proposal

Faculty members are invited to meet with research mentors from various disciplines to get feedback on their research proposals during faculty proposal mentoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester. Participants can sign up for a 30-minute slot starting at 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. in Room 305 McNutt Hall on Tuesdays and in Room 118 Fulton Hall on Thursdays. The deadline to sign up is the Friday of the previous week. Please bring a proposal idea and one-page statement about your work to share with mentors.
