McMillin named to ABET commission

Dr. Bruce McMillin, associate dean for research and external relations in the College of Engineering and Computing and professor of computer science, has been appointed to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Computing Accreditation Commission. ABET is a non-governmental organization that accredits post-secondary education programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. The appointment is effective in July.

O’Malley named to board for iron, steel association

Dr. Ron O’Malley, the F. Kenneth Iverson Endowed Chair of Steelmaking Technologies, has been named second vice president of the board of directors for the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). O’Malley also serves as director of Missouri S&T’s Kent D. Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center.

Researchers create shape-memory aerogels, publish in Chemistry of Materials

A research team led by Dr. Nicholas Leventis, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of chemistry, has developed aerogels with a rubber-like elasticity that can “remember” their original shape. The research was published May 2 in the American Chemical Society journal Chemistry of Materials. Leventis’ co-authors are Dr. Lia Sotiriou-Leventis, professor of chemistry; graduate students Suraj Donthula, Chandana Mandal, and Adnan Malik Saeed; and summer interns Theodora Leventis and James Schisler.

Biology student wins Renaissance Student Award

Jordan Powell, a recent graduate in biological sciences, was named the 2017 Renaissance Student of the Year during a reception at Missouri S&T’s student art show May 1. The awards committee also commended two finalists: Faith Van Wig, a graduating senior in computer science, and Owen Smith, a graduating senior in physics.

Four faculty awarded Smart Living seed funding

Four Missouri S&T faculty members have been awarded seed funding for two interdisciplinary projects related to S&T’s Smart Living signature area. The awards were selected from 13 proposals from 11 departments and 29 faculty members. Smart Living co-directors Dr. Bruce McMillin and Dr. Nancy Stone selected the winning proposals in consultation with the associate deans of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business and the College of Engineering and Computing. NEH grant builds bridge between humanities, engineering

Whitworth honored with AIChE student award

Mathias Whitworth received the 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Virtus Dynamical Chemical Engineering Student Award, sponsored by MYNAH Technologies, on April 12 in St. Louis. He received the award for outstanding scholarship and service to AIChE. In addition to many other accomplishments, he has led the AIChE Chem-E-Car team for two years.
