Grant focuses on reducing Missouri student loan debt, default
For the fifth consecutive year, Missouri S&T’s student financial assistance office has received the Missouri Department of Higher Education’s $25,000 Default Prevention Grant. Bridgette Betz, director of student financial assistance, drafted and submitted the proposal. Tyler Johnson, manager of student financial assistance, will manage the grant funding for the 2017-18 aid year.

Ma named American Chemical Society fellow
The American Chemical Society (ACS) named Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching professor of chemistry, to the 2017 class of ACS fellows. The list includes 65 scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and have made important contributions to ACS, the world’s largest scientific society. The 2017 fellows will be recognized at a ceremony and reception Monday, Aug. 21, during the society’s national meeting in Washington, D.C. Read more.

Dr. Chevy Hanqing Fang received the Family Firm Institute’s Best Doctoral Dissertation Award for his dissertation, “Strategic Persistence, Dominant Strategy and Firm Performance in Publicly Traded Family Firms.” Fang is an assistant professor of business and information technology at Missouri S&T.

Dr. Kathyrn Northcut, professor of English and technical communication, co-edited Scientific Communication: Practices, Theories and Pedagogies, an academic book for instructors. Dr. Han Yu, professor of technical communication in the English department at Kansas State University, co-edited the book. Routledge will publish it in early 2018.

Dr. Tseggai Isaac, associate professor of history and political science, wrote a book chapter for Cultural Perspectives, Geopolitics and Energy Security of Eurasia: Is the Next Global Conflict Imminent? The book is published by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Press. His chapter is titled “Army Culture and Foreign Language Strategy: The Global Front Within the Context of the Home Front.”

In rankings published July 18, College Choice names Missouri S&T to its “35 Best Online Master’s in Information Technology Degrees list. Missouri S&T ranks No. 7 on the list, which also includes Johns Hopkins University (No. 8), George Washington University (No. 16) and Colorado State University (No. 30). College Choice is an independent online publication.
Read More »Staff scholarship goes to Lt. Oscar Kemp
Like the students he serves and protects, Lt. Oscar Kemp will be hitting the books this semester. Beth Abner, president of Staff Council, presented the council’s inaugural employee scholarship to Kemp, an officer with University Police, during a Staff Council meeting on July 13. The $250 scholarship will go towards Kemp’s tuition this fall as he pursues a bachelor’s degree.

Kyle Paaren’s interest in nuclear engineering was first sparked when he earned a Boy Scouts merit badge on the subject at age 11. Fast forward a few years, and Paaren, who is now a Ph.D. student in nuclear engineering at S&T, has been awarded an Integrated University Program (IUP) Fellowship by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
