‘Big beam’ team brings home third place
A team of Missouri S&T civil engineering students finished third in the nation in a “big beam” competition, marking the university’s highest placement in the competition’s 15-year history. The team consists of graduate students Eli Hernandez and Hayder Alghazali. Dr. John Myers, professor of civil engineering and associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering and Computing, is the team’s advisor.

According to Elsevier, “Barriers to Widespread Adoption of Electric Vehicles: An Analysis of Consumer Attitudes and Perceptions,” is the most cited article on the topic of energy policy published since 2012, extracted from Scopus. The article’s authors are Dr. Ona Egbue and Dr. Suzanna Long.

McManus among speakers commemorating Antietam cemetery anniversary
Dr. John McManus, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history, was a featured speaker in September for the National Cemetery Anniversary Speaker Series in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Antietam National Cemetery. He presented “The Fallen American Soldiers of World War II: Their World of Combat” on Sept. 9 at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. His presentation was broadcast on C-SPAN. Dr. Michael Bruening, associate professor of history, presented his research on the Protestant Reformation during a conference at the University of Geneva in Switzerland in September. Bruening’s paper is titled “Guillaume Farel and the German Reformers: The Origins of Reformed Doctrine in French-speaking Switzerland.” He presented his paper in French.

The Modern English Teacher journal recently published “Practical Routes to Professional Development,” an article by Dr. Thu H. Tran, senior advisor for the intensive English program in international affairs. Tran’s article was published in Vol. 26, Issue 3, 2017, of the publication for English language teachers.

For Carla Bates, perseverance pays
Dr. Carla Bates, assistant teaching professor in business and information technology, earned her Ph.D. in information sciences and learning technology from the University of Missouri-Columbia this summer. Her achievement culminates a career of higher learning that began when she first joined Missouri S&T as a clerk typist in 1989. Read her story.

- Research findings by Dr. Charles Wojnar, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are featured in the August 2017 issue of Aerospace & Defense Technology magazine. The article highlights Wojnar’s development of an experimental method for understanding solid propellant aging. His new method was picked up by the magazine after his paper, “Measuring Propellant Stress Relaxation Modulus Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer,” was published in the Journal of Propulsion and Power. - Dr. Leslie Gertsch, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering, is quoted in a recent Astronomy article, “Could We Survive Without Our Planet?” The article, written by Abigail Beall, was published Sept. 18 on the magazine’s site, www.astronomy.com.
Bohner elected ISDE president
Dr. Martin Bohner, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of mathematics and statistics, has been elected president of the International Society of Difference Equations. His two-year position started Aug. 1.
