Edmands Martin’s book chapter accepted for publication
Sarah Edmands Martin, senior media producer in the office of sponsored programs, presented her paper titled “Swiping Left on Empathy: Gamification and Commodification of the (Inter)Face” at the World Design Summit in October in Montreal, Canada. Martin’s chapter proposal of the same title has been accepted in the book Design & Ethics by Bloomsbury publishing.

Dr. Lian Duan, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, co-authored a paper that received a third-place H.J.E. Reid Award. The Reid Award is NASA Langley Research Center’s top award recognizing technical excellence in research publications. Duan and Meelan M. Choudhari, an aerospace engineer at Langley, wrote the paper, titled “Numerical Study of Acoustic Radiation due to a Supersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer.”

Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, professor of environmental health engineering, has been named an associate editor of the journal of Water Environment Research (WER). Published monthly by the Water Environment Federation, the WER journal includes peer-reviewed research papers, research notes and critical reviews.

Geologist leads $2.1 million NSF project
Dr. Wan Yang, associate professor of geology and geophysics, has devoted his academic career to unlocking the mysteries of the Permian mass extinction more than 250 million years ago. That geological odyssey now finds him leading an 11-institution consortium that has been collectively awarded a $2.1 million National Science Foundation research grant.
