Bohner publishes book on time scales calculus

Dr. Martin Bohner, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of mathematics and statistics, is an author of a new textbook on calculus time scales for undergraduate and graduate students. Multivariable Dynamic Calculus on Time Scales, published by Springer International Publishing, is available as an eBook and a hardcover textbook. Bohner wrote the book with Dr. Svetlin Georgiev, assistant professor of mathematics and informatics at Sofia University in Bulgaria.

Adekpedjou conducting research in France

Dr. Akim Adekpedjou, associate professor of mathematics and statistics, is spending part of this summer at the Institute of Applied Science of University of Toulouse in France, funded by the National Center of Scientific Research of France. He is working on a project titled “Modeling and Analysis of Spatially Correlated Failure Time Data with Intermittently Observed Time Varying Covariates and Applications in Epidemiology and Biomedical Studies.”

Humboldt fellowship takes math professor to Germany

Dr. Xiaoming He, associate professor of mathematics and statistics, has received a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. As part of the fellowship, He will visit the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany from February to August 2018 and work with the research group of Dr. Ulrich Rude for coupling porous media flow with free flow by using two modeling ideas.

Design teams bring home trophies

Three Missouri S&T design teams recently competed and excelled in competitions:

  • Missouri S&T’s Rocket Design Team finished in second place among 96 teams in the inaugural Spaceport America Cup, held June 20-24 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The competition challenges teams of college students to design, build and launch rockets to a targeted altitude. The Missouri S&T team also won the James Barrowman Prize for the most accurate flight prediction among the 96 teams.

Xiao named Canadian Academy of Engineering fellow

Dr. Chengshan Xiao, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been inducted as a fellow into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is one of 52 new fellows to formally join the Canadian academy at an induction ceremony recently in Ottawa.

Ferguson named Royal Society of Arts Fellow

Dr. Ian Ferguson, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in June. The RSA — formally known as the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce — was established in 1754 in London to enrich society “through ideas and action.”

Campus committee meets with ACE advisor on internationalization efforts

Susan Sutton, an advisor on internationalization with the American Council on Education (ACE), visited Missouri S&T’s campus June 19. She met with campus leaders, including Chris Maples, interim chancellor, and Robert Marley, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. She also met with members of Missouri S&T’s internationalization committee.
