Solid waste management award goes to residential life team

The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Council selected Missouri S&T’s residential life department to receive one of four of the council’s Outstanding Contribution in Solid Waste Management Awards. Sarah Perry, manager of student support services in residential life at S&T, leads the university’s end-of-the-year student collection and donation activities.

Girl Scout leads elementary school students in STEM-related activities

Olivia Money, a junior in chemical engineering, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Money got her hands gooey while completing her project to earn the Gold Award. She led a group of third-graders at Sherwood Elementary in Arnold, Missouri, in several science-related workshops, instructing them on making slime and fossils and taught topics like density. Money also created learning materials and activity kits for teachers to use in the coming years. Money said she wanted younger kids, especially girls, to become interested in science.

Paper on ant tracking ranked among top geophysics papers

Tianze Zhang, a Ph.D. student in geology and geophysics, presented a paper at the 2017 Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) meeting in Houston in September. More than 7,200 geophysicists worldwide attended the SEG meeting.

Sheppard co-sponsors THATCamp in Toronto

Dr. Kathleen Sheppard, associate professor of history and political science, co-organized and co-led the History of Science Society’s fourth annual The Humanities and Technology Camp, or THATCamp, on Nov. 12 in Toronto, Canada. The event was an “unconference,” in which the schedule was determined by participants. People of all experience levels were welcome to interact, try out new applications, ask questions, give advice and learn.

Oerther named associate editor of environmental engineering journal

Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, professor of environmental health engineering, has been named an associate editor of the Journal of Environmental Engineering. The American Society of Civil Engineers publishes the journal monthly for its more than 150,000 members.

Power outage planned for later this month

A daylong power outage that will affect several buildings on campus is planned for later this month after the end of the fall semester. Specifics about the outage, including the date, are still under discussion. The outage is required for replacement of one of S&T’s substation transformers, and scheduling of the replacement requires coordination with experts from outside organizations.

Film festivals bring international flavor to S&T

Movie buffs from the campus and community will have the opportunity to experience French and Hispanic films during the spring 2018 semester. Missouri S&T has received grant funding to bring two film festivals to campus in 2018. The long-running Free Film Festival, meanwhile, will be on hiatus during the spring semester due to budget issues. Like the Free Film Festival offerings, the French and Hispanic films will be open to the public and free of charge. Listings of the movies to be shown through these two series will be publicized near the beginning of the spring 2018 semester, which begins on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Celebrate at Chancellor’s Holiday Brunch Dec. 6

Warm up, wind down and enjoy winter wonder. Faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the holidays with refreshments, live piano music, caroling and company at the Chancellor’s Holiday Brunch 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Hasselmann Alumni House. Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy or a canned food donation to give to those in need within our community.
