Research posters on display

The Intelligent Systems Center invites the campus to view graduate students' posters illustrating their research from 3:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in St. Pat's B of the Havener Center. Prizes will be awarded to the top three posters. Refreshments will be served.

Leaf-raking fundraiser for bands

|
Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, Missouri S&Ts chapters of the national band service fraternity and sorority respectively, are holding their annual leaf-raking fundraiser. For a nominal fee, members will help rake and dispose of fallen leaves. For more information or to set up an appointment, contact Jarell Crutcher at jrcn96@mst.edu. All proceeds go towards S&T bands.
Blue Key Honors Society is asking for nominations for Miner of the Semester and Organization of the Semester Awards. The Miner of the Semester Award honors a current student who exceeds expectations in the areas of community service, campus involvement and leadership. The Organization of the Semester Award honors an organization that promotes school spirit, is involved in community service or engages students to get involved on campus. Nomination forms are available from Katie Fritts at krfwd5@mst.edu. Nominations are due by Nov. 10.

Suits needed

|
Since the spring of 2007, the Career Opportunities Center has provided a suit closet free to all students. Due to this program's continued success, the suit closet needs replenishing for the upcoming semester. Specifically, men's suits are needed in a variety of sizes. Men's blazer jackets and ties are also being accepted at this time. All items must be clean and ready to wear at the time of donation. Contact Nancy at 341-4229 for pick-up or drop off donations to the COC at Room 304 Norwood Hall.

Chartwells is going green

Chartwells Dining Services, with support from the Residential Hall Association, is encouraging patrons to go trayless in the Thomas Jefferson and Rayl Dining Halls. Many other colleges and universities across the nation have seen the positive impact on both students and the environment from going trayless.
A top priority expressed by campus leaders will be addressed by a new program in the works by human resource services and enrollment management. This professional development program will address employee software and information technology skills.

Showcase holidays at Holiday Expo

Leadership and cultural programs and student diversity programs are looking for students, staff and faculty to showcase cultural celebrations, holidays or festivals at S&T's first Holiday Expo. The expo will be discussed from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Silver and Gold Room of the Havener Center.

Helicopter parents to be discussed

Undergraduate advising is hosting a conference to discuss the "Helicopter Parent" phenomenon and present an overview of available resources for parents of Missouri S&T students at noon today, Monday, Oct. 27, in the Missouri-Ozark Room of the Havener Center. This will include a brainstorming session of ideas to direct the energies of parents who wish to be involved in their son or daughter's college experience. Lunch will be provided. The flu immunization clinic on Nov. 4 is open to Missouri S&T employees and their Coventry-insured spouses and dependents age 9 and older. Parents are required to accompany and sign a consent form for dependents ages 9 to 18. There is no requirement for a physician authorization.
An employee wellness workshop titled "Keeping Your Balance through the Holidays (and Every Day)" will be held from 4:45-6:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the Meramec-Gasconade Room of the Havener Center. Presenters Dr. Patti Fleck, director of counseling and disability support services, and Dr. Lynn Rossy, will discuss incorporating healthy habits every day to ease stress. Participants will be guided to identify small but powerful positive energy routines in four key areas of their lives to promote wellness. Healthy snacks will be provided. Prior to its 7:30 p.m. concert that evening, members of the Army Field Band will rehearse with the Missouri S&T Wind Symphony from noon-12:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in Leach Theatre. Following the rehearsal, the Army Field Band Chamber Brass will perform a recital at 1 p.m., also in Leach Theatre. Both events are free and open to the campus and community.
The physics department will host the Missouri S&T and University of Missouri-St. Louis Meeting Colloquium featuring Dr. Fred Schlachter from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and American Physical Society. Dr. Schlachter's lecture, titled "Over a barrel: America's energy crisis," will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in Room 104 Physics Building. All members of the campus and community are invited to attend.

Diwali Night 2008

The India Association presents Diwali Night on Sunday, Oct. 26. Activities include a cultural show from 4-6 p.m. in Leach Theatre, a fireworks display beginning at 6:15 p.m. near the Havener Center, and a dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Pats Ballroom of the Havener Center.

Textbook rental program works

The Missouri S&T Bookstore's textbook rental program, working with the math department, has saved students nearly $100,000 by renting only one title over the last three semesters. Flu immunization Nov. 4

Maxim Health Systems will provide a flu immunization clinic for Missouri S&T faculty and staff only from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center. These immunizations are covered under Coventry at no cost to employees with a valid Coventry insurance card. Employees not covered under Coventry can purchase a flu shot for $26.

Unity Day Oct. 22

The annual celebration of diversity at Missouri S&T will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Havener Center Atrium. This year's theme, "Turn Down Your Stereotypes: Busting Common Myths," focuses on confronting stereotypes through musical and dance performances, an interactive game, ethnic foods and a special feature of Perfect 10 Improv. If you have a clicker, you'll want to bring it to this event. Unity Day is sponsored by student life, leadership and cultural programs, and the chancellor's office.

The authors of "They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky," this year's S&T One Book selection for all incoming freshmen, will be on campus to give a public presentation, answer questions, sign books, and recognize the winners of the writing contest. Surplus procedure changes

Effective Nov. 1, the surplus process will change. The changes include the implementation of charges for items recycled to campus departments from surplus and a delivery fee for item(s) delivered from the surplus warehouse by procurement staff. Faculty talent needed

Faculty with talent, or simply entertainment value, who would like to participate in the First Annual Engineers Without Borders Faculty Talent Show to be held on Feb. 6, are asked to contact Chris Weisbrook at chris@mst.edu.
A soccer referee training clinic will be held from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in Room 216 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Building. The total fee for the clinic is $65. Those who successfully complete the clinic will be certified to referee youth soccer games in Missouri, including the recreational games played at the Rolla Area Youth Soccer League. Licensed referees will receive payment for their work. If interested, email your name and phone number to the clinic coordinator, V.A. Samaranayake, at vsam@mst.edu as soon as possible.
The Alumna and Woman Student of the Year Committee invites the campus to the awards ceremony and coffee to be held from 11:30 a.m.-noon Friday, Oct. 17, in St. Pat's B of the Havener Center. The awards recognize the demonstrated commitment of an alumna to enhancing the lives of women and that of a female student to support her peers.

Show Me Shop updates

New prices files for Corporate Express and Office Max have been added to PeopleSoft eProcurement's Show Me Shop and some processes have changed:
Main Street between 10th and 11th streets will be closed to all traffic beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, and will remain closed through 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, for the Miner Alumni Association Block Party. Any vehicles parked in this area at 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, are subject to being towed.

Help keep the campus accessible

Please notify disability support services (DSS) when any accessibility issues occur, including accessible doors or elevators that are broken and any obstructed pathways. Contact DSS at Room 203 Norwood Hall or via email at dss@mst.edu. As an incentive, those who contact DSS with concerns will be entered into a drawing on Nov. 4 for a $25 gift certificate from the Missouri S&T Bookstore.

The International Friends Program still needs sponsors to pair with international students to help get accustomed to our country and community. It's a great experience for all involved, and the level of participation is up to you. Most sponsors and students get together once a month.
Dr. Stacy Tintocalis from the University of Alabama at Birmingham will present a workshop titled, "Writing Creative Non-Fiction," at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in Room 101 Humanities and Social Sciences Building. All students, faculty and staff are invited and refreshments will be served.

Campus is invited to TJ open house

The staff of the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall and the residential life department invite the campus community to an open house to celebrate the completion of the newly remodeled North North Tower. The event will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. Refreshments will be served and tours of the new spaces will be given.
Chartwells and residential life are hosting a grand opening celebration for the new Outtakes dining area in Residential College 2. The event will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the basement of Residential College 2. All faculty, staff and students are invited to enjoy games, prizes and free food.
The Missouri S&T Writing Center is hosting its fifth annual "Inspired By Writing" Art Show. The opening reception will be held in the Writing Center from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Room 113 Campus Support Facility. Works of art may be dropped off at the Writing Center between Oct. 6 and Oct. 15. The works will be displayed until Thanksgiving week, the last week of November. There is no submission fee. The art show is free and open to the public. All artwork must be inspired, in some way, by writing. For additional information, contact the Writing Center staff at 341-4436 or stop by during normal business hours.
Counseling and disability support services continues its fall 2008 Zip Lock Lunch Series with "Reboot Your Motivation," to be held from noon-12:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Room 208 Norwood Hall. The workshop will cover a simple three-part tool to assess how you may be stuck and strategies to overcome procrastination.
Effective Oct. 6, a new payment process called ExacTrac was implemented for the payment of eProcurement catalog orders (orders placed through the Show Me Shop). Implementation of the new payment process begins with invoices from Fisher Scientific. The remaining ePro catalog vendors will be added after of a few weeks of piloting with Fisher Scientific. All ePro vendors should be added to the process by the end of the calendar year 2008.

Surplus sale Friday and Saturday

Campus procurement will have a surplus sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The sale will be held at the warehouse located at 300 Fairgrounds Road in Rolla.

Representatives from the UM controllers office will be on campus Friday, Oct. 10, to present information and answer questions about two new policies that outline requirements for departments in conducting fiscal business. Both presentations will be held at the Havener Center.

An "Elevator Pitch" competition will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Havener Center (room TBD) on the Missouri S&T campus. During the competition, S&T students will have 90 seconds, about the duration of an average elevator ride, to communicate a business idea or concept and compete for prizes.
Expanding Your Horizons, an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade girls to learn more about careers in science, math, engineering and technology, will be held Friday, Nov. 21. NASA astronaut Stephanie Wilson will be the keynote speaker and more than 12 new workshops are planned.
Public radio station KMST began its Fall Membership Drive on Saturday, Oct. 4, with its popular bluegrass program "Bluegrass for a Saturday Night." The drive runs through the following Sunday, Oct. 12.
The Regional Professional Development Center is offering a free teaching workshop for students, faculty and staff. Dr. Fred Jones will present, "Tools for Teaching: Discipline, Instruction, Motivation," from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Havener Center. Counseling and disability support services will begin its fall 2008 Zip Lock Lunch Series with "Reading Made Easy," to be held from noon-12:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in Room 208 Norwood Hall. The workshop will introduce the assistive technology available to students struggling to maintain focus, or for the auditory learner.
The campus is invited to a question-and-answer session with participating UM Tax Deferred Annuity (403(b)) Plan vendors from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center. The University of Missouri tax deferred investment department has invited the vendors to Missouri S&T to answer questions, provide more information about the UM 403(b) Plan and discuss important retirement issues. No appointment is necessary.

David Summers' Oil Drum blog honored for educational outreach

Dr. David A. Summers, Curators' Professor of mining engineering, was recently recognized for his work on a blog, called The Oil Drum, which discusses energy issues. Summers and his colleague Kyle Saunders received the M. King Hubbert Award for Excellence in Energy Education from the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas. University students are particularly susceptible to cyber security threats. Knowing how to surf safely and protect data and personal information is crucial. Throughout Cyber Security Awareness Month, IT will offer tips for best cyber security practices.
As part of the Business 397 capstone project, The Department Store was formed to be the only on-campus manufacturer and distributor of customized departmental T-shirts. Chili cook-off announced

Engineering management and systems engineering will hold a Halloween Chili Cook-off Contest at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Call Theresa Busch at 341-4572 to enter. The campus is invited to eat for $1 per bowl in Room 223 Engineering Management Building. All proceeds will go to G.R.A.C.E.
