The University of Missouri Research Board awarded 10 grants to Missouri S&T faculty members in June. The 12-month grants provide seed money for research initiatives with significant potential for a high return on investment.

Findings by Missouri S&T researchers suggest that ants need work-life balance to survive. Dr. Chen Hou, assistant professor of biological sciences, led the research team that wrote, “Heterogeneous Activity Causes A Nonlinear Increase in the Group Energy Use of Ant Workers Isolated from Queen and Brood.” The article is published in the February 2017 issue of Insect Science. The research team includes Dr. Zhaozheng Yin, assistant professor and Daniel C. St. Clair Fellow of computer science; Nolan Ferral, a sophomore in biological sciences; Kyara Holloway, a junior in biological sciences; and Mingzhong Li, a Ph.D. student in computer science.

Two Missouri S&T faculty members are featured in a news story on laws regarding technology such as self-driving cars, drones and robots. The KRCG-13 TV story, “Humans Vs. Machines: A Loophole in the Law,” aired Feb. 13. It features Dr. Keng Siau, chair and professor of business and information technology, and Dr. Zhaozheng Yin, assistant professor and Daniel C. Missouri S&T is one of 35 universities to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to establish a University Transportation Center (UTC). Missouri S&T received a $1.4 million UTC “tier 1” grant to develop robotic tools to inspect and maintain bridges and portions of highway from the air or from the side of the structure. Dr. Genda Chen, the Robert W. Abbett Distinguished Chair in Civil Engineering, is director of the new center. Other faculty involved in the project include:
