  • Mining Magazine published the article, “Missouri S&T Team Takes on Explosive Engineering Research” on July 30 about research led by Dr. Kyle Perry, assistant professor of mining and nuclear engineering. In the study, Perry’s team will pair explosives with common mining materials, with the ultimate goal of improving mine safety.
  • Dr. Larry Gragg, professor emeritus of history, was interviewed by reporter Tom Hawley on channel KSNV in Las Vegas. In the news segment, which aired Aug. 1, Gragg discussed how mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel shaped Las Vegas.

    Opening Week is just around the corner

    The office of new student programs is gearing up to welcome the freshman class of 2018 to the Miner family. Students will arrive on campus to move in Sunday, Aug. 12. Opening Week will officially kick off that evening with a “Party at the Puck” picnic. Activities will continue through Saturday, Aug. 18.

    Throughout the week, students will:

    • Complete an academic workshop, learn about campus and college life, participate in a team-based experiential learning project, and discover what it means to be a Miner.
    • Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, Aug. 17, to watch the races through campus and cheer on new students.

    Union Pacific hosts Project X, driving new students to compete

    The new student programs staff is pleased to announce that Union Pacific will once again sponsor Opening Week’s Project X. Opening Week runs from Sunday, Aug. 12, through Saturday, Aug. 18. New students will be divided into 85 mentor groups, guided by upperclassmen mentors, and modify a remote-controlled vehicle.

    Counseling services, financial aid offices closed today

    Two offices are temporarily closed today (Wednesday, Aug. 1) for staff development.

    • The counseling services office will reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, for students, faculty and staff. For more information, call the office at 341-4211 and listen to the entire voice message.
    • The student financial assistance office will re-open Thursday, Aug. 2, and resume regular business hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

    Memorial service for Dr. Mack Daily planned Aug. 3

    Dr. Madison McDonald “Mack” Daily Sr. of Rolla, professor emeritus of engineering management, passed away July 22. He was 86. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Rolla. Beginning at 10 a.m., his family will receive friends prior to the service.

    Learn about football at women’s clinic on Friday

    The Miner Football team will host a women’s clinic 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Pre-game and post-game socials are optional. The clinic will include a “Football 101” session, a formation walkthrough with position-specific teaching, and football drills that the S&T football players run through daily. All drills are optional. Please wear tennis shoes to perform the drills.
