Psychology colloquium to address gender bias in STEM

Women continue to be underrepresented in the fields of physical sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Multiple and complex factors contribute to the gender gap in STEM participation; one factor that has received considerable empirical support is the role of gender bias. Dr. Jessica Cundiff, assistant professor of psychology will review evidence of gender bias in STEM, as well as strategies to address gender bias during a presentation 1-1:50 p.m. Monday, March 13, in Room 254 Toomey Hall.

Survey: Business owners optimistic

Local business owners are optimistic about business opportunities, according to a survey conducted by Missouri S&T’s Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC). “Of those surveyed, more than 81 percent of businesses expect their business to improve somewhat or improve greatly over the next one to three years,” says Keith Strassner, director of technology transfer and economic development at Missouri S&T. “Although we expected most to have a positive outlook, it was surprising to see this number that high.”

Stay strong, stay healthy with strength training

Employees, retirees and community members are invited to participate in “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an eight-week strength training program beginning Monday, April 3. A trained instructor will guide participants through a warm-up, eight muscle-strengthening exercises and a cool down.

Lost or stolen Miner ID card?

If your Miner card is missing, you can now deactivate it via the lost card application on the Miner Card ID Office website. Simply log in and change your card status from “active” to “deactive.” Please note that deactivating your Miner Card only affects access to buildings using Miner locks or residential life locks. If you find your card after marking it “deactive,” you may log into the application and mark it “active” again or purchase a replacement ID from the Miner Card ID office, Room 106 Centennial Hall. For more information, please contact the ID office at 341-4996.

Speakers announced for TEDxMissouri S&T

Learn how the innovators of today are facing the challenges of tomorrow at a TEDx talk hosted by Missouri S&T 6-9 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Leach Theatre. Of the eight speakers, four are faculty or staff members at Missouri S&T. Speakers and their topics will include:

  • “The Power of School Breakfast” by Jon Barry, director of No Kid Hungry Missouri
  • “Time Travel — One Second at A Time” by Terry Barner, senior video producer in marketing and communications at Missouri S&T

Missouri S&T chancellor accepts Wright State presidency

St. Pat’s Ball kicks off celebration

Missouri S&T students, faculty and staff are invited to volunteer for the Gonzo Gives Back Day of Service Thursday, March 16. Check-in will start at 7:45 a.m. and participants will perform service projects 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Donuts and T-shirts will be provided to volunteers while supplies last. Drinking alcohol during St. Pat’s? Read this first

As we approach St. Pat’s festivities, Missouri S&T’s University Police would like to offer the following information pertaining to alcohol safety.

Consider not drinking at all.

If you decide to drink:

  • Plan your drinking. Think about how much you want to drink before you drink.
  • Take care of yourself. Don’t put yourself in a situation where other people might have to take care of you.
  • Don’t ever force or pressure anyone to drink.
  • Know when you have had enough.
  • Never leave your drinks unattended.
  • Designate a sober driver.
