Learn about White Nose Syndrome

Missouri S&T’s International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Design Team invites the campus community to its White Nose Syndrome Symposium. The symposium will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. This year, the team is working on a project to combat White Nose Syndrome, a disease caused by a fungal pathogen that has been devastating bat populations in the United States since 2007. This symposium will include presentations by subject matter experts concerned with curtailing the spread and effect of White Nose Syndrome on bat populations and our ecosystems. Participate in the ‘Selfies Around the World’ contest

The campus community is invited to participate in a “selfie” contest at Rolla downtown businesses. The contest is part of the sixth annual Celebration of Nations. Contestants should visit participating area businesses, take a selfie in front of a flag display and post the photo to the Celebration of Nations Facebook page with the tag #CofN15. The most fun and creative photo from each business location will be chosen by a panel of judges, and the submitter will be awarded a $25 gift certificate or a prize of equal value by the business. The contest begins Monday, Sept. 14, and ends Friday, Sept. 25.

Bertelsmeyer Hall lock maintenance Monday

Bertelsmeyer Hall will have lock system maintenance 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. During this maintenance window, automatic lock and unlock schedules will still operate correctly, but I.D. cards will not be able to unlock doors. This maintenance will only affect locks at Bertelsmeyer Hall. For more information, email locks@mst.edu.

ROTC to conduct ceremony tomorrow

Missouri S&T’s Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC will conduct a ceremony commemorating the events of Sept. 11, 2001, at noon tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 11). The campus community is invited to attend the event. Army ROTC will fire the 75 mm pack howitzer cannon in honor of the passengers and aircraft that crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Help name the second solar village

Missouri S&T is building a second solar village on 10th Street between Allgood Bailey Stadium and Innovation Park and it needs a name. On Saturday, Sept. 12, the office of sustainable energy and environmental engagement (OSE3) will kick off a naming contest. Faculty, staff, students and members of the community are invited to submit suggestions. Email suggestions for the second solar village’s name to Tony Arnold at arnoldab@mst.edu.

Carbon nanotube seminar today

The campus community is invited to attend a mechanical and aerospace engineering graduate seminar at 3:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 10) in Room 199 Toomey Hall. Dr. Matthew R. Maschmann, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will present “Carbon Nanotube Forests: Growth, Morphology and Controllable Properties.” Refreshments will be available at 3:15 pm.

Ambystomatid salamander seminar Sept. 14

Dr. Lori Eggert, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will present “Landscape genetics of co-occurring Ambystomatid salamanders at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri” at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in Room 126 Schrenk Hall. The research investigates genetic dispersal for three species of salamanders at Fort Leonard Wood.

Flags to fly at half-staff Friday
