International travel resources

The University of Missouri System provides two types of insurance coverage for faculty and staff who travel internationally for university purposes. This insurance coverage is provided at no cost to the traveler or university department. AIG coverage includes travel accident and sickness benefits. MedEx coverage includes evacuation and transportation services. MedEx also provides an online location for travelers to store electronic medical information, copy of passport, travel schedule and more. Faculty and staff planning to travel internationally should contact Amy Smith in international and cultural affairs at 341-6875 to receive details of the coverage, identification card and emergency contact information.

RTD2014 keynote speaker

Dr. Mark Suskin, deputy director of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, will be a keynote speaker at the Research and Technology Development conference (RTD2014) Sept. 15-16. Suskin will speak about obtaining funding for research and present a view of the future steps of the Division of Advanced CyberInfrastructure. See a list of all conference events online. Attendees of RTD2014 are required to register. There is no cost for attendees of the event.

Army ROTC to test cannon

Members of the Missouri S&T Army ROTC battalion plan to test fire the cannon outside Harris Hall sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. No projectiles will be fired from the cannon, just sound. The sound is expected to be equivalent to that of the firing of a 10-gauge shotgun shell. ROTC cadets will form a perimeter around the area to keep bystanders at a safe distance.

The 2014 Opening Week programs were a positive experience for our new students, thanks to the cooperative efforts of the many faculty, staff and students who participated. It takes a campus community to carry out these effective and valuable programs for our new students and it was done with your help. Developing early relationships with students, staff and faculty is instrumental in helping students make a successful transition to college life. Opening Week also establishes realistic academic expectations for our new students and provides programs that promote academic success. Four professors recently published

Dr. Bill Fahrenholtz, Dr. James Stoffer, Dr. Eric Morris, who earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Missouri S&T in 2000, and Dr. Matt O’Keefe wrote a chapter in the book “Rare Earth-Based Corrosion Inhibitors.” It was published on Aug 19, and is available on amazon.com.
