UMR IT will be distributing critical security updates via the SUS servers on all IT-supported Macintosh OS X and Linux-based machines with a campus-standard install on Tuesday, Nov. 20. These updates will improve the security of the Apple Macintosh OS X and Linux operating systems.

Customers who use IT-installed computers (faculty, staff, CLC computers, etc.) may be prompted to reboot their computers shortly after 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The affected computers will automatically reboot themselves if no one is logged in.

This is virtually identical to the process IT uses to install Windows XP and Vista updates.

Mailing addresses are changing

Work was completed this summer to assign street addresses to all campus buildings according to the city’s grid system for the primary benefit of first responders. Even though many buildings are not on a city street, the system will allow those responders to quickly pinpoint the structures’ locations by virtually extending existing streets. Plans call for street addresses to be included on new campus building signage.

United States Postal Service representatives have verified that these new street addresses may be used in lieu of the “1870 Miner Circle.” This change will serve to maintain what USPS efficiencies exist while allowing less confusion for freight delivery personnel. While campus mail will continue to be received with the Miner Circle address line, the campus is encouraged to begin now to use the appropriate street address in its place. The addresses will be incorporated into the website for ordering the new Missouri S&T business cards, envelopes and letterhead.

In 1995, the United States Postal Service’s Rolla Postmaster approached the Chancellor requesting that the campus designate one unique address line that would immediately precede the city/state/zip code line in all official campus mail addresses. The USPS would then assign a new zip code, the combination of which would, it was claimed, allow for improved service for the campus through efficiencies in scanning and sorting. In mid 1995, the campus began using “1870 Miner Circle” as the unique line and “65409” as the new campus zip code.

Although subsequent improvements in USPS mail service may have been realized, problems have since been encountered with package and freight deliveries since 1870 Miner Circle is not a physical address. A new list of buildings where mail is delivered with the associated addresses that are now on record with the USPS is available online.

IT to distribute security updates

UMR IT will be distributing security updates to all campus-managed Windows-based systems on Monday, Nov. 19. Campus-managed Windows systems will automatically reboot after the updates are installed at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. All campus customers are strongly recommended to save their work before 3 p.m. on Tuesday to keep from losing any important data.

"Right now we're looking at start-up packages with 401k over 100 thousand dollars a year; it's incredible," explained Dunn-Norman.

-- Also: UMR's proximity to Taco Bell apparently counts for something. The Springfield News-Leader has the scoop.

University rep to answer questions about annuity programs

A representative from UM System Faculty and Staff Benefits is on campus for the purpose of meeting with employees who are enrolled in tax deferred annuity programs with the university and are also enrolled with vendors that are being discontinued with the university. The reason for a discontinuation is that the vendor does not have a sufficient population of university employees to stay on an active list of options.

The representative, Larae Kostal, will be on campus Thursday, Nov. 15, to meet with employees. She will be in Room 206 of the University Center at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Anyone who has questions about these changes is welcome to attend one of these sessions.

Seeking Jubilee exhibitors

The 2007 December Commencement is quickly approaching and once again we will be hosting the semi-annual Graduation Jubilee. The event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14, and will be held in the atrium of the Havener Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All UMR faculty and staff, the graduating class and their families and friends, as well as honorary and professional degree recipients and their guests, are invited to attend. The event is a celebration, designed to honor not only the graduates, but also the faculty and staff who have contributed to their successes at UMR. Jubilee exhibitors are currently being sought. Contact Connie Goodridge in the Chancellor's Office at 341-4114, or email goodridg@umr.edu if you are willing to participate.

This event provides an opportunity to showcase what’s been happening in the life of the graduates while at UMR. Through displays and exhibits, we want to feature student projects and activities and the contribution of the faculty and staff to their success. We would like to offer an opportunity for parents of our graduates to talk with the faculty and staff and hear first-hand about the environment at UMR and how this has impacted the success and achievements of their sons and daughters. That is why we are asking for your help. Whether teaching, advising, or serving the student population in other ways, you are the best source for identifying the excellent projects and activities that go on every day at UMR, both inside and outside of the classroom. Besides identifying these activities, your involvement in their display at the Graduation Jubilee is what will spell success for this event. These graduates will soon become alumni, a primary constituency of our university.

And last week, the school launched a related video campaign at hello.mst.edu. The school has encouraged university folks to post their own videos to the site, too.

Those video clips are just getting more and more famous. Read the full story here.

UMR in the news: Meth busters

This in USA Today:

Greg Story, an atomic physics professor at the University of Missouri-Rolla, said the technology used in the scanner is not new.

Molecules energized by ultraviolet light emit a unique color spectrum that can be measured, Story said. Even when meth is created from different chemicals, the methamphetamine molecule would emit its own unique spectral signal, he says.

"I can't speculate on (the scanner's) accuracy, but yes, in principle, it's absolutely possible," Story said.

UMR in the news: Name change

From today's Kansas City Star:

“What we are seeing is institutions trying to better explain their value to their key constituents,” said Christopher Simpson, chief executive officer of SimpsonScarborough, a Washington, D.C-based branding and marketing firm that works primarily with colleges and universities. “It’s kind of like when the Boston Patriots became the New England Patriots to give them broader appeal. They weren’t just Boston’s team any more. They were New England’s team...Suddenly, institutions really had to do a better job at marketing. Part of that is making sure their name reflects their mission, their vision and their value.”

UMR in the news: Coal mining careers

Yahoo News (via The Christian Science Monitor) has the scoop on coal mining careers:

When Joshua Hoffman's parents, a computer scientist and law-enforcement officer, sent their son to the University of Missouri at Rolla (UMR), a coal mine was probably the last place they imagined higher education taking their son. Yet, as an explosives engineering major, Mr. Hoffman is now excited to don a hard hat and pursue the black rock.

OK. Technically, explosives engineering is a minor. But you can read the full story here.
