The Missouri State Highway Patrol will use the former TKE fraternity house, located on State Street next to Bertelsmeyer Hall, for tactical training sessions 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. Do not be alarmed if you see police cars and police officers in the area.

Be prepared for tornado season

When the weather gets dangerous, do you know what to do? All members of the Missouri S&T community should be familiar the proper procedures for seeking shelter during severe weather activity.

During an actual tornado:

A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar. The Rolla Police Department will activate the city’s outdoor sirens. When warning sirens sound:

  • Seek shelter, preferably in a designated area. Move to an interior hallway, under a stairwell or a room with no windows.
  • Stay away from outside walls, exterior doors and glass windows or partitions. Do not open windows.
  • Take cover under heavy furniture. Cover your head.
  • Check local radio and television stations concerning the tornado warning.
  • There is no all-clear message sounded through the siren system. However, Missouri S&T does send out all-clear messages through its mass notification system.

Beware of scam

University Police has received a complaint of attempted fraud related to a telephone call from someone claiming to be with S&T’s police department with a “spoofed” phone number that appeared to be University Police’s number, 341-4300. The caller said the student owed money and threatened arrest if the student did not pay the caller. The department reminds the campus community to keep the following tips in mind:

Police training planned March 28 in former TKE house

The Rolla Police Tactical Unit and the Phelps County Warrant Service Team are using the former TKE fraternity house, located on campus next to Bertelsmeyer Hall, for  tactical training sessions. Training is planned 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 28. Do not be alarmed if you see several police cars and police officers in the area.

Fraternity, police adopt family for holidays

The holidays will be a little brighter for one local family, thanks to Tau Kappa Epsilon and University Police. Individuals in the police department and fraternity joined forces and adopted a family through the Greater Rolla Area Community Enterprise (GRACE). They collectively contributed more than $900 and then purchased toys on the wish lists of all three children and gave the parents gift cards for gas and groceries. They provided a holiday meal and presented the gifts to the family at the TKE house on Dec. 10.

Building coordinator training planned next week

University Police will provide training for Missouri S&T’s campus building coordinators. Coordinators will learn about the responsibilities of campus building coordinators and available resources. The training sessions will be held:

  • 1-2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center
  • 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center

Fundraising gets hairy, goes casual for ‘Shop with a Cop’

University Police officers and staff are participating in “No Shave November” or “Jeanvember” to help raise funds for Phelps County’s Shop with a Cop program. Missouri S&T police officers and department staff members make a donation to either not shave or to wear jeans during November. With the raised funds, local offices take children holiday shopping in December. To donate to Shop with a Cop, please stop by S&T’s police department on the ground floor of the Campus Support Facility or contact Chief Doug Roberts.
