Opening Week
Opening Week is just around the corner
The office of new student programs is gearing up to welcome the freshman class of 2018 to the Miner family. Students will arrive on campus to move in Sunday, Aug. 12. Opening Week will officially kick off that evening with a “Party at the Puck” picnic. Activities will continue through Saturday, Aug. 18.
Throughout the week, students will:
- Complete an academic workshop, learn about campus and college life, participate in a team-based experiential learning project, and discover what it means to be a Miner.
- Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, Aug. 17, to watch the races through campus and cheer on new students.
Union Pacific hosts Project X, driving new students to compete
The new student programs staff is pleased to announce that Union Pacific will once again sponsor Opening Week’s Project X. Opening Week runs from Sunday, Aug. 12, through Saturday, Aug. 18. New students will be divided into 85 mentor groups, guided by upperclassmen mentors, and modify a remote-controlled vehicle.

Volunteers needed for Project X design contest
The new student programs staff seeks running judges to assist opening week mentor teams during their Project X track competition, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Volunteer judges may pick any timeframe or stay the entire time. This position requires jogging across campus to follow teams as they race. Volunteers will get a free T-shirt and meal. The 2014 Opening Week programs were a positive experience for our new students, thanks to the cooperative efforts of the many faculty, staff and students who participated. It takes a campus community to carry out these effective and valuable programs for our new students and it was done with your help. Developing early relationships with students, staff and faculty is instrumental in helping students make a successful transition to college life. Opening Week also establishes realistic academic expectations for our new students and provides programs that promote academic success. New student programs is pleased to announce that Union Pacific will once again sponsor the 2014 Opening Week’s Project X. Union Pacific will have representatives on campus during Opening Week to assist our new students with programs and judging their projects. 1,300 new students will attend Opening Week, which starts Saturday, Aug. 16.

Faculty participation is vital when the university welcomes new students to campus in August. There will be more than 1,200 new students on campus for the 2014 Opening Week orientation. Interested faculty will meet and have lunch with the student mentor groups and discuss faculty expectations and classroom respect. The goal of this activity is to facilitate a positive interaction between new students and faculty. This is your chance to give new students tips on how to be successful in the classroom. The faculty interaction with new students will be from Tuesday, Aug. 19, through Thursday, Aug. 21.
