  • Research findings by Dr. Charles Wojnar, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are featured in the August 2017 issue of Aerospace & Defense Technology magazine. The article highlights Wojnar’s development of an experimental method for understanding solid propellant aging. His new method was picked up by the magazine after his paper, “Measuring Propellant Stress Relaxation Modulus Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer,” was published in the Journal of Propulsion and Power.   • Dr. Leslie Gertsch, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering, is quoted in a recent Astronomy article, “Could We Survive Without Our Planet?” The article, written by Abigail Beall, was published Sept. 18 on the magazine’s site, www.astronomy.com.

Professor receives governor’s award

Dr. Xiaoping Du, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T, is the 2017 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Du, who teaches introduction to engineering design, dynamics and probabilistic engineering design, has been a member of the S&T faculty since 2002.

Pan publishes research in Advanced Materials

Dr. Heng Pan, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has published new research in the Advanced Materials journal on low-cost manufacturing of “bioresorbable” electronic sensors. The study, “Low-cost Manufacturing of Bioresorbable Conductors by Evaporation-condensation-mediated Laser Printing and Sintering of Zn Nanoparticles,” was published in April.

Four faculty awarded Smart Living seed funding

Four Missouri S&T faculty members have been awarded seed funding for two interdisciplinary projects related to S&T’s Smart Living signature area. The awards were selected from 13 proposals from 11 departments and 29 faculty members.
