Schonberg presents in England on hypervelocity

Dr. Bill Schonberg, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, presented two papers at the 2017 Hypervelocity Impact Symposium, held April 23-28 in Canterbury, England. Schonberg’s first presentation was based on work he performed as a faculty fellow at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the summer of 2016. He described the development of design equations that would increase the safety of human space travel and space operations in earth orbit and beyond.

Oerther registered as Chartered Engineer in UK

Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was registered as a Chartered Engineer by the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom. Chartered Engineer, identified through the regulated use of the post nominal CEng, is a protected title in the UK reserved for the pinnacle of professional engineering recognition.

Oerther selected to attend 2017 Fulbright alumni conference

Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of State Alumni Thematic International Exchange Seminar (Alum TIES) titled “The New Frontiers of Global Public Health.” The conference will be held Feb. 8-11 at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

University receives $1.4 million grant for transportation center

Missouri S&T is one of 35 universities to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to establish a University Transportation Center (UTC). Missouri S&T received a $1.4 million UTC “tier 1” grant to develop robotic tools to inspect and maintain bridges and portions of highway from the air or from the side of the structure. Libre’s video channel reaches students, over 130 countries

Dr. Nick Libre, assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, created an innovative way of teaching his Mechanics of Materials class. Following an injury that limited his mobility, he decided to record his lectures and upload the videos to YouTube so he could still reach his students without being in class. His students encouraged him to continue to produce them after he returned to the classroom. To date, Libre’s YouTube channel has reached over 130 countries and nearly 20,000 visitors. Oerther appointed to United Nations committee

Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was appointed as a member of the credentialed U.S. delegation to the United Nations Committee on World Food Security in Rome, Italy, in October. As a foreign affairs officer, this was Oerther’s fourth appointment to represent the U.S. Department of State as part of an inter-agency governmental delegation to a major international conference.
