ADVANCE awards first department enhancement grants

Four proposals were selected for funding through S&T’s ADVANCE Program’s Department Enhancement Grant initiative. These grants help departments implement strategies to reduce inequities and enhance the departmental climate, especially in the recruitment, retention and advancement of women.

Patent goes to chemistry group for aerogels method

Dr. Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, professor and chair of chemistry, and her research team, received a U.S. patent for the method they developed to synthesize amorphous carbon aerogels and graphitic carbon aerogels from polymeric xerogel powders.

Chemistry group creates new auxetic material

A new type of lightweight shape-memory auxetic polymer was made by Dr. Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, professor of chemistry, and her research team including Rushi Soni, who graduated in December 2021 with a doctorate in chemistry, and chemistry doctoral students ABM Shaheen ud Doulah, and Vaibhav Edlabadkar.
