Dr. Michael Bruening, associate professor of history and political science, gave two guest lectures in French as part of his Fulbright Scholars grant to France. He spoke on “The Network of Jean Morély and the Enemies of John Calvin” at the University of Lyon on Nov. 10, and on “Charles du Moulin and the ‘Moyenneurs’” at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, on Nov. 21.

Lajubutu presents on institutional research

Dr. Oyebanjo Lajubutu, assistant vice provost for institutional research and assessment, presented a professional development workshop at the 2016 forum of the Mid-America Association for Institutional Research held Nov. 9-11 in Kansas City, Missouri. The title of the workshop was “Leveraging Embedded Analytics to Leap from ‘Good to Great’ Institutional Research Reporting.”

Poster nabs travel award, places in contest

A Missouri S&T poster received third place at the International Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering conference (ISCRE 2016) in June in Minneapolis. Abbas J. Sultan and Laith S. Sabri, both Ph.D. students in chemical and biochemical engineering, co-authored the poster under the supervision of Dr. Muthanna Al-Dahhan, professor and chair of chemical and biochemical engineering.

Modern English Teacher publishes article by Tran

The Modern English Teacher journal recently published “Putting Research and Technology into Vocabulary Learning and Teaching,” an article by Dr. Thu Tran, senior academic advisor for the intensive English program in international and cultural affairs. Tran’s article was published in Vol. 25, Issue 4, 2016, of the publication for English language teachers.

Chemical engineering poster receives honorary mention

Haider Al-Rubaye, a Ph.D. student in chemical and biochemical engineering, presented a poster at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 2016 annual Sustainability Poster Session in San Francisco on Nov. 16. The poster, “Experimental Investigation on Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor to Maximize the Methane Gas Production in the Biogas,” received an honorary mention.

Libre’s video channel reaches students, over 130 countries

Dr. Nick Libre, assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, created an innovative way of teaching his Mechanics of Materials class. Following an injury that limited his mobility, he decided to record his lectures and upload the videos to YouTube so he could still reach his students without being in class. His students encouraged him to continue to produce them after he returned to the classroom. To date, Libre’s YouTube channel has reached over 130 countries and nearly 20,000 visitors. FLSA changes effective today

Changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for the University of Missouri are effective today, Thursday, Dec. 1. More information will be coming soon from the University of Missouri System. The Fair Labor Standards Act is a federal law that establishes the federal minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and child labor standards. In May, the U.S. Department of Labor announced changes to the FLSA.

Filming of ‘active shooter’ video planned Dec. 4
