Pan publishes research in Advanced Materials
Dr. Heng Pan, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has published new research in the Advanced Materials journal on low-cost manufacturing of “bioresorbable” electronic sensors. The study, “Low-cost Manufacturing of Bioresorbable Conductors by Evaporation-condensation-mediated Laser Printing and Sintering of Zn Nanoparticles,” was published in April.

Dr. Bill Schonberg, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was elected president of the Hypervelocity Impact Society at its 2017 meeting in April in Canterbury, England. Schonberg’s term as president runs until the society’s next conference, which is in 2019.

Dr. Bruce McMillin, associate dean for research and external relations in the College of Engineering and Computing and professor of computer science, has been appointed to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Computing Accreditation Commission. ABET is a non-governmental organization that accredits post-secondary education programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. The appointment is effective in July.

Dr. Ron O’Malley, the F. Kenneth Iverson Endowed Chair of Steelmaking Technologies, has been named second vice president of the board of directors for the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). O’Malley also serves as director of Missouri S&T’s Kent D. Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center.

A research team led by Dr. Nicholas Leventis, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of chemistry, has developed aerogels with a rubber-like elasticity that can “remember” their original shape. The research was published May 2 in the American Chemical Society journal Chemistry of Materials. Leventis’ co-authors are Dr. Lia Sotiriou-Leventis, professor of chemistry; graduate students Suraj Donthula, Chandana Mandal, and Adnan Malik Saeed; and summer interns Theodora Leventis and James Schisler.

Jordan Powell, a recent graduate in biological sciences, was named the 2017 Renaissance Student of the Year during a reception at Missouri S&T’s student art show May 1. The awards committee also commended two finalists: Faith Van Wig, a graduating senior in computer science, and Owen Smith, a graduating senior in physics.

University of Missouri System President Mun Y. Choi will present the system’s budget plan for fiscal year 2018 and beyond during a presentation at 1 p.m. Friday, June 2, on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The presentation will be live streamed at 1 p.m. Friday, June 2, in Room 125 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall, and members of the Missouri S&T community are encouraged to attend. Faculty, staff and students may also watch the address via a live stream (the link will be available on www.umsystem.edu/president/budget_planning) on the device of their choice.
