McManus among speakers commemorating Antietam cemetery anniversary

Dr. John McManus, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history, was a featured speaker in September for the National Cemetery Anniversary Speaker Series in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Antietam National Cemetery. He presented “The Fallen American Soldiers of World War II: Their World of Combat” on Sept. 9 at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. His presentation was broadcast on C-SPAN. Bruening presents paper in Switzerland

Dr. Michael Bruening, associate professor of history, presented his research on the Protestant Reformation during a conference at the University of Geneva in Switzerland in September. Bruening’s paper is titled “Guillaume Farel and the German Reformers: The Origins of Reformed Doctrine in French-speaking Switzerland.” He presented his paper in French.

Tran publishes on professional development for teachers

Tran, senior advisor for the intensive English program in international affairs. Tran’s article was published in Vol. 26, Issue 3, 2017, of the publication for English language teachers.

For Carla Bates, perseverance pays

Wilkins discusses gaming in education as panelist

Barbara Wilkins, an instructional designer in educational technology, served as a panelist for a panel on the role of gaming in education during Gen Con 50 in Indianapolis in August. The group discussed gaming for students in elementary grades and through university levels, along with ways to promote student success and how gaming may enhance workplace skills. Gen Con 50 is the longest-running gaming convention in the world.

  • Research findings by Dr. Charles Wojnar, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are featured in the August 2017 issue of Aerospace & Defense Technology magazine. The article highlights Wojnar’s development of an experimental method for understanding solid propellant aging. His new method was picked up by the magazine after his paper, “Measuring Propellant Stress Relaxation Modulus Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer,” was published in the Journal of Propulsion and Power.   • Dr. Leslie Gertsch, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering, is quoted in a recent Astronomy article, “Could We Survive Without Our Planet?” The article, written by Abigail Beall, was published Sept. 18 on the magazine’s site, www.astronomy.com.

Faculty, staff and students, as well as area community members, can apply to present their ideas at a TEDx event Thursday, March 15, on S&T’s campus. The deadline for applications and nominations is Sunday, Oct. 15.

“Dare to Consider” is the theme. Organizers invite you to share your thoughts and ideas on “what it would mean to truly care about thinking, interacting or existing in our classrooms, in our careers, in our communities, in our homes and within ourselves.”
