Dr. Thu Tran, administrator for the intensive English program in the Office of International and Cultural Affairs, published a peer-reviewed article, “Using Sound Recorders as a Pedagogical Tool for Language Development,” in Vol. 49, Issue 1, 2016 of TESOL Reporter. The TESOL reporter is a journal dedicated to the dissemination of ideas and issues of interest to English language teachers worldwide.

Dr. Genda Chen, the Robert W. Abbett Distinguished Chair in Civil Engineering, was interviewed by The Economist for an article, “Stopping Bridge Collapses,” published Oct. 15. Chen spoke about his research on bridge scour and “smart rocks.”

Gertsch goes on the record about ‘secret lives of rocks’

Dr. Leslie Gertsch, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering, discusses the mechanical properties of rock under densely populated areas in the article published Oct. 11.

Khayat ranks as ‘most cited’ in civil engineering

Dr. Kamal Khayat, the Vernon and Maralee Jones Professor of Civil Engineering, is among the world’s most cited researchers in the civil engineering discipline, according to the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Khayat is the only Missouri S&T professor to be included in the “most cited” ranking. He also is the only professor from the four-campus University of Missouri System to make the list.

Faculty recognized at regional ASEE meeting

Missouri S&T was well represented at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Midwest Section annual meeting and conference Sept. 25-27 in Manhattan, Kansas. S&T earned the Faculty-Mile award for attendance. The section includes states of Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Outstanding Paper Award goes to Aljazaeri, Myers

Zena Aljazaeri, a Ph.D. candidate in civil engineering, and Dr. John Myers, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received the Outstanding Paper Award at the fourth International Conference on Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies (SCMT4) in Las Vegas in August. Their paper is titled “Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete One-Way Slabs for Flexure Using Composite Materials: Evaluation of Different Composite Materials.”

CASE recognizes advancement team

Missouri S&T was recently recognized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for excellence in fundraising. S&T received a 2016 CASE Sustained Excellence Award in Fundraising for Overall Performance, based on judges’ analysis of three years of fundraising data.

TTED co-sponsors small-business road tour

The Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development (TTED) at Missouri S&T co-sponsored the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Road Tour in St. Louis on Aug. 18. The SBIR Road Tour is a national outreach effort to promote the non-dilutive technology funding opportunity provided through the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.
