Engineering professor to speak about recognition technology

Dr. James Keller will present “Recognition Technology: Lotfi’s Look to the Future from the Late 1990s,” 3-4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in Room 103 Engineering Management. A reception will follow. Keller is a Curators’ Distinguished Professor in electrical and computer engineering and computer science and the R.L. Tatum Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The presentation is part of the Bernard Sarchet Graduate Seminar Series.

Save your space in RESPOND program on Dec. 13

Counseling, disability support, and student wellness will present a University of Missouri System-licensed program, RESPOND, to train students, faculty and staff on how to recognize and provide initial assistance to people with mental health concerns. The free training will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Missouri-Ozark Room of the Havener Center. Participants will learn how to approach someone in distress and where to refer them for help. A light breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.

Tonight’s Mars viewing cancelled

The viewing of Mars, previously scheduled for Nov. 14, has been cancelled and replaced by the viewing of the Great Orion Nebula, beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the Missouri S&T Observatory. The Great Orion Nebula is one of the brightest of its kind in the night sky. The event is free and open to the public. Get more details.

Presentation planned on engineering smart stimuli-responsive cement

Dr. Raissa Ferron, assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, will present “Engineering Smart, Stimuli-responsive Cementitious Composites” at noon Thursday, Nov. 17, in 109A Fulton Hall. She will speak about research on improving the performance of concrete by using a self-adaptive material approach.
