Expect emergency alert test at noon

Missouri S&T will conduct a test of its emergency alert system at noon Wednesday, Sept. 13. The test will include a text message to students, faculty and staff saying, “This is a test of the Missouri S&T emergency mass notification system. This is only a test.” The test will also include voice and email alerts. If you are not enrolled in the emergency alert system, you may sign up at alert.mst.edu.

Volleyball team to thank faculty, staff at tonight’s free game

Faculty and staff will receive free admission to the Missouri S&T volleyball match against Drury University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in Gale Bullman Building. As part of Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, employees can also participate in a volleyball serving contest for a chance to win prizes during halftime. Following the match, faculty and staff are invited to a dessert social in the gym.

Attend Sept. 11 memorial service at noon

Today marks 16 years since the United States was the victim of a terror attack. To recall the events of that day, honor the memory of those who gave their lives in service and to remember the coming together of the country in the days that followed, Air Force and Army ROTC will hold a ceremony at noon today (Monday, Sept. 11) in front of Harris Hall. The groups invite the campus community to join them on this anniversary.

Flags to fly at half-staff Sept. 11-12

In accordance with Missouri State Law, flags at all state and government buildings will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today (Monday, Sept. 11), to honor the individuals who died as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. By order of Gov. Eric Greitens, the United States flag and the Missouri flag will be flown at half-staff at all government buildings statewide from sunrise to sunset Monday, Sept. 11, and Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, in honor of Mike Lair. Lair, who served four terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, died Sept. 5.

Host a workshop for girls’ STEM conference

Women are needed to volunteer as workshop presenters and group guides for attendees of the 18th annual Expanding Your Horizons conference, which will be held Friday, Nov. 17, on S&T’s campus. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The event brings more than 450 students to campus.

  • 1:30-3:30 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 11), in St. Pat’s A of the Havener Center
  • 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Sept. 12, in St. Pat’s A of the Havener Center

The reception will be held 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center. Wlezien began his duties on Aug. 1.

Leach Theatre art show opens Sept. 12

Throughout the fall semester, visitors to Leach Theatre can view an exhibit by local artists Orval Reeves and Louis Smart. Reeves’ works for the theater include a variety of paintings; Smart’s works are bronze sculptures and statues. An opening night reception for the semester-long art show will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the lobby of Leach Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. Get more details.

Webinar to focus on faculty response to student mental health issues

Faculty members are in a critical position to play a key role in student mental health because they are often the first to notice when a student is struggling with mental health issues. Hear from Dr. Greg Eells, who will present “Faculty Response to Student Mental Health: Engage Faculty as Part of the Solution,” at a webinar 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Room 202 Curtis Laws Wilson Library. Eells is the director of counseling and psychological services at Cornell University.
