IT disables temporary administrator button on unsupported Macs

S&T IT will disable the Grant Temp Admin button for macOS computers no longer supported by Apple, effective June 16. This change applies to devices running macOS versions older than macOS 13 (Ventura).

Why will this change?

These systems do not receive security updates, which increases vulnerability to exploitation. Allowing elevated privileges on unsupported devices raises the risk of malware, unauthorized changes and lateral movement by attackers. This action aligns with industry security standards, reduces operational risk, supports compliance efforts and encourages timely upgrades to supported versions, which maintains overall security and integrity.

What will change?

On June 16, S&T IT will disable the Grant Temp Admin button for macOS computers that are no longer supported by Apple. This currently applies to macOS versions older than macOS 13 (Ventura).

S&T IT follows Apple’s official support model, which means only Macs that run the three latest macOS versions will retain access to this temporary administrative privilege.

Who is impacted by this change?

If your Mac is running an unsupported version of macOS, then:

  • You will no longer be able to grant yourself temporary administrative rights using the Grant Temp Admin button in macOS Self Service.
  • You will need to update your device to a currently supported version of macOS to regain access.
  • Minimal impact to campus users is anticipated.

What needs to be done?

If your Mac cannot be updated to a supported version of macOS because of hardware limitations, you will need to replace your device. New university-supported computers are available through our standard procurement process: Request a new computer.
