Continued – Share these tips from current students to increase your student’s success in the classroom and general campus life. Students were recently asked by student accommodations and testing advisors what they wish they had known before coming to Missouri S&T. Here are their answers in the final part of this two-part series. (Names have been withheld.)
Study Skills
- “Practice study and notetaking skills on the easy classes in high school because college is HARD, and if you don’t know how to study, it is hard to learn to study and learn the massive amount of material.”
- “Take classes with friends whenever possible so you can study together and become more accountable for the work.”
- “For group work – make sure you have contact information for everyone; it is important that everyone makes an equal effort.”
- “It was not easy to go to the first LEAD session, but you should go BEFORE you think you will need the help. Then it will be easier to use it when you DO need the help.”
- “Stay on track with homework.”
- “Use a planner.”
- “You might study as hard as you can, but you’re not guaranteed the grade you want.”
Student Success Center
- “It was nice to go see therapy dogs on certain days. This made it easier to ask for help about how their support works. If you know what they provide, you will be ready when you need help.”
Student Accommodations and Testing
- “Signing up for accommodations and scheduling exams in the testing center is very important [if needed].”
- “It is important to know what accommodations exist, and that a process must be followed to get them.”
- “Faculty notification [of accommodation] letters must be requested and sent to professors individually. They prefer to get these letters early in the semester.”
Medications | Student Health Services
- “It is critical to know how to properly do a medical records transfer.”
- “Student Health Services is helpful, but you have to take actions yourself.”
- “If your provider is out of state, meds can’t be filled ‘across state lines.’ Student Health Services was helpful, but the student had to return physically to their doctor to complete the transfer.”
- “It is extremely important to know how to manage medications and health services.”
Housing
- “Greek life has been good, but it needs to match your goals. It is important to know the expectations and responsibilities.”
- “Use the roommate assignment system as best you can. Try to avoid the automatic room assignment.”
- “Housing decisions are very personal. If you choose Greek life and it doesn’t work, then leave. You don’t need to stay if you’re uncomfortable or it isn’t a good fit. For some people it is great.”
- “Detergent packets aren’t useable in washing machines at TJ Hall.”
- “Bring notes on how to do laundry from home.”
Food
- “Buy frozen fruits/veggies and take vitamins because healthy eating actually does make a difference.”
- “Be aware of what you are ordering for take-out and try to make sure it has something good for you in it, such as protein with your bagel.”
- “You can spend DBD’s on crates at Havener [at the end of the semester] so you have non-perishables available.”
General College Life
- “Try to find a friend to go the gym with you – blowing off steam is needed here!”
- “Get a sleep schedule.”
- “Avoid early classes. If you end up with an 8 a.m. class, get up at 5 a.m. so you are ready for it.”
- “Complete housing and registration for classes ASAP or you will likely get stuck somewhere you don’t want to be.”
- “Manage your time.”
- “You are responsible for doing your work – you must be self-accountable.”
- “Using a bike helps you to get across campus easily.”
- “Be a part of an organization that suits you – small ones count too.”
- “Rolla’s okay.”
- “When traveling on I-44, plan trips in advance.”
