Missouri S&T is transitioning to Canvas by Instructure as the standard Learning Management System. A faculty and student committee was created in 2013 to examine the past Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard, and to determine if it was the best fit for the campus. Extensive faculty and student surveys and open forums were held to gather feedback from across campus. After careful consideration, the committee recommended that alternate LMS options be reviewed. Several LMS options were closely examined by the committee and numerous LMS providers were invited to campus to speak, both in open forums, with the committee, and with information technology professionals.

The committee of faculty and students unanimously recommended that the Missouri S&T campus change from Blackboard to Canvas by Instructure for LMS. Nearly 120 instructors from varied disciplines have piloted more than 200 courses involving approximately 4,000 students during this evaluation period. Feedback from these students and instructors has been overwhelmingly favorable toward Canvas as a preferred LMS.

Blackboard will be going away, and a timeline for that transition is under development. More detailed information will be published from the educational technology transition team.
