Two members of the Missouri S&T swimming team have landed on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team for the 2007-08 season.

Two members of the Missouri S&T women's track and field team have been selected to the ESPN the Magazine academic all-district team for the recently completed 2008 season.

Lady Miners advance to Sweet 16

The Lady Miners leading scorer, Tamara McCaskill, spent most of the first half during Saturday's NCAA Division II regional game against Quincy on the bench with two early fouls, and she only had two points at the break.

"We told her at half time, Tamara, you've got to go out there and light things up," said Missouri S&T coach Alan Eads.

And she did.

In other sports news, Missouri S&T has some strong pole vaulters.

Lady Miners tournament bound!

For the first time since 1996, the Lady Miners are going to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Lady Miners earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament on Sunday (March 9) and will take on Michigan Tech in the first round of the Great Lakes Regional this Friday, March 14. The Lady Miners (22-6), seeded third in the region, will face off against the No. 6 seed Michigan Tech Huskies (23-7) on Friday, March 14, at Drury University in Springfield, Mo. Drury, the No. 1 seed in the region and the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament champion, is hosting the regional. More news to come at sports.mst.edu.

Lady Miners stumble in Springfield

The Lady Miners came up short in their bid to capture a Great Lakes Valley Conference title, suffering a 79-67 loss Saturday to Northern Kentucky in the semifinals of the conference tournament in Springfield, Mo. Katie Bunge led the Lady Miners with 23 points, but Missouri S&T shot just 36.8 percent for the game and now awaits word tomorrow night on who its opponent will be in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional next week. Lady Miners bounce back

Support softball

The Missouri S&T softball team will host a fundraiser Sunday evening at Pizza Inn on the eve of the start of the 2008 season. The event will run from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and the team will receive 20 percent of the proceeds made that night as well as any gratuities or donations. The Lady Miner players will be in attendance to serve the customers that night.

The Lady Miners, picked to finish third in the GLVC this season after making their first appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament last year, start play Feb. 22 in Huntsville, Ala.

Basketball promos scheduled

Missouri S&T men's and women's basketball teams will host Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 9, an event that will be sponsored by Miner Corporate Club platinum member Forum Dental. All military personnel, active or retired, will be admitted free to the 1 p.m. doubleheader with Rockhurst University with a military identification card. A contingent of soldiers from Fort Leonard Wood is expected to be in attendance for the games that afternoon.

Lady Miners streak stays alive heading into weekend

For a time, it appeared that the Lady Miners' winning streak might fall one game short of the school record. But after outscoring Southern Illinois Edwardsville 28-14 over the final 14 minutes, the streak was a alive and well heading into weekend action at Quincy. Lady Miner mania

The Lady Miner basketball team trailed 14th-ranked Northern Kentucky at halftime, but outscored the Norse 44-19 after the intermission and rolled to a 66-42 victory Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Gronewold is great

A familiar sight to Miner football fans over the last four seasons has been one of Ashton Gronewold catching touchdown passes. The senior wideout , who is one of six players in NCAA Division II history with at least 50 touchdown receptions, scored three times in his final game as a Miner Saturday as the Miners knocked off Kentucky Wesleyan 49-21 in Owensboro, Ky. Watch games on the web

UMR football and men's basketball games Saturday will be available on webcasts for fans to watch over the internet. UMR's football game at Tiffin University is being provided by B2Networks and will show the game live beginning at 12:20 p.m. Central time; the kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. Central. Meanwhile, the Miners' exhibition basketball game at Southeast Missouri State can be viewed through the Ohio Valley Conference's webcast of the game and can be viewed free of charge. Fans can access the game by clicking to the OVC's webcast page and will need Windows Media Player in order to watch the game. The webcast will begin at 7:15 p.m., for the 7:30 p.m. contest in Cape Girardeau. Click here for more details.

The latest members of the MSM-UMR Athletic Hall of Fame were inducted Saturday, a day on which the Miners rolled to a 48-10 win over Lincoln at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Watch volleyball, scare the competition

The Lady Miners will play their final home match of the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday against UMSL and two fans will have a chance to win a one-night stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Rolla. It will be "Scare the Competition Night," so fans are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costume to the game. One costumed male and one costumed female winner will be declared winners. Miners get a Homecoming win

The Miners got into the win column for Homecoming Saturday, as freshman quarterback Steve Watson threw five touchdown passes -- three to Ashton Gronewold -- and Jerome Miller ran for a career-high 137 yards to lead UMR to a 44-28 win over Central State at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Watch volleyball, get free stuff

The UMR Lady Miner Volleyball Team will give away 75 free Missouri S&T shirts (donated by Key Sport) during the home match with SIUE Friday, Oct. 19. The action starts at 7 p.m. As part of fan appreciation night, the team will also give away Lady Miner autographed cards to the first 500 fans and one lucky fan will win $50 worth of Key Sport Bucks. Soccer Miners win in overtime

For the second time in three days, the Miner soccer team ended up in an overtime contest -- and came away a winner. Daniel Stokes headed in Brandon Moore's corner kick with just under five minutes to play in the second overtime, giving UMR a 2-1 win over Indianapolis Sunday at the UMR Soccer Field. UMR volleyball kicks off Save Lids campaign

The UMR volleyball team will kick off a Save Lids to Save Lives breast cancer awareness campaign at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, when the team takes on St. Joseph's College. Fans are asked to wear pink in support of the program.

Fans are also asked to collect pink Yoplait yogurt lids and bring them to any home volleyball game during the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At the end of the month, the lids will be returned to Yoplait. The company has pledged tol donate 10 cents for each lid received to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

The volleyball team will also be in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, which is Parent's Night, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, which is Boy and Girl Scout day. All Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will get into the game free.

Miners come up short

Ashton Gronewold put up the best all-purpose yardage numbers in school history. Steve Watson had the third-highest passing yardage total ever for a Miner quarterback in his debut. The UMR football team got into the win column for the first time this year Saturday night, topping Wisconsin-Stout 28-10 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The Miners got 304 yards passing from Brad Guidry and 231 all-purpose yards from Ashton Gronewold. More sports.

Saturday is Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day

Saturday is Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day at UMR. The cross country, volleyball and football teams will all host events. All individuals with military identification cards will admitted free to the volleyball match with nationally-ranked Rockhurst that gets underway at 3 p.m., as well as to Saturday night’s 6:30 p.m. football game with the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

A fireworks show during the halftime intermission of the football game will be included in the activities Saturday night. A group of at least 200 soldiers are expected to come to Rolla from the Fort Leonard Wood base for the games. More.

Opening Week for volleyball is almost here

Opening weekend for UMR Volleyball is almost here. Friday, Sept. 7, is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Faculty and staff will receive $1 off admission to the contest against Drury with a UMR ID. Free pizza and T-Shirts will be given to "serving" contest winners. Saturday, Sept. 8, is Military Appreciation Day. Admission is free with a military ID. Free pizza and T-shirts will be given away following a "hitting" contest.

Tailgate prior to UMR-MSU football game

You are invited to the UMR-Missouri State football game and tailgate party Thursday, Aug. 30. The tailgate party, hosted by the MSM-UMR Springfield Section, starts at 5:30 p.m. at BearFest Village, which is located just south of Plaster Sports Complex near the corner of Grand and National Avenue in Springfield. Park in lot 18, 24 or 38. Look for the tent with UMR signage. The game starts at 7 p.m. Tickets will be disbursed during the tailgate pary to those who pay in advance. Are you ready for some football?

UMR will open its 2007 football season Saturday and fans coming to the 6:30 p.m. game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium will have a pair of additional things to look forward to besides the football game. The first 300 fans in attendance wearing UMR apparel to the game against Truman State will receive a rally towel, courtesy of UMR Corporate Club sponsor Taco Bell, which is the game sponsor for Saturday’s contest. In addition, there will be a fireworks display at the stadium during the halftime intermission. The fireworks will be put on by the UMR department of rock mechanics and explosives engineering and sponsored by the UMR Corporate Club.

Tickets for the game are $8 for reserved seats and $5 for general admission. UMR students will receive free admission with a valid student I.D. Season tickets for the 2007 season are also on sale in the UMR athletics office.

Are you ready for some volleyball?

The inaugural season of volleyball at UMR is right around the corner and fans will get their first opportunity to see the team Monday night (Aug. 20) when the Lady Miners will hold their Silver and Gold intrasquad scrimmage at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

The scrimmage will start at 7 p.m. and will be free of charge to the public. The team will also be available for autographs following the event. The full story is here .

All-Americans in our midst

For the second consecutive year, Bill Gaul has landed the top award on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. The UMR senior was selected as the "Academic All-American of the Year" in the at-large category for the second year in succession. He was one of two members of the swimming team to be selected to the top academic team, as fellow senior Andy Shelley was named to the third team.
