Missouri S&T students to help rural Missouri town with economic development

Graduate students in Karl Bugher’s Engineering Management 361 class will present plans for economic development in Vienna, Mo., to the town’s residents at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Vienna High School. The class will be presented live online as a distance education course, says Burgher, with assistance from Missouri S&T’s information technology department.

The students are enrolled this semester in a graduate-level engineering management course taught by Karl Burgher, a lecturer at Missouri S&T. The class’ assignment was to prepare budgets, time lines and feasibility studies for 10 projects to help Vienna officials with local economic development.

Projects to be presented include a walking path through a city park, windmills to subsidize the city’s energy supply, expansion of a local flea market to include a farmer’s market, rebuilding a park pavilion, installing a tee-ball field and building a helicopter landing pad adjacent to a local nursing home.

New diplomas available

Redesigned University of Missouri diplomas that reference Missouri S&T will soon become available for May 2008 graduates and alumni.

The redesigned diplomas, approved recently by the University of Missouri administration, replace the former wording “Done at the University in the City of Rolla, State of Missouri,” with “Done at Missouri University of Science and Technology in the City of Rolla, State of Missouri.” The university’s full name is in bold type set in a larger font size – the same size as the graduating student’s name – to draw attention to the new name.

All May 2008 Missouri S&T graduates will receive the new diploma in the mail, along with a coupon to order the previous University of Missouri diploma. The previous diploma will be available to graduating students at no charge over the next six years (through May 2013).

Alumni who graduated from the Rolla campus prior to Jan. 1, 2008, may purchase the redesigned diploma at a reduced rate of $15. Order forms are available online at registrar.mst.edu/diplomainfo/index.html .

Images of both diplomas may be viewed online at registrar.mst.edu/diplomainfo/redesign_dipl.html .

New process for consultant services

The campus process for obtaining the services of a consultant has undergone a substantial revision. The new process now in place is described online.

In addition, a relatively new process for agreements for the services of speakers is now available for use. It simplifies the process previously used for such agreements.

These are just two of a variety of types of agreements necessary for conducting Missouri S&T activities, but there are a limited number of individuals to whom authority has been delegated to sign such agreements for the campus on behalf of the Curators of the University of Missouri. A current list of those individuals can be found here.

The following is a partial list of the more common agreements types: consultant, facilities use, intellectual property rights, leases, license agreements, memoranda of understanding, non-disclosure non-university use of university equipment, facilities and resources agreements, off campus event booking/catering/banquetagreements, performance, power of attorney agreements, professional services, research grants and contracts, speaker.

Missouri S&T Police caution against thefts

The Missouri S&T Police Department is cautioning members of the campus community to lock and secure their residences, offices and vehicles following several burglaries on campus.

William Bleckman, director of the Missouri S&T Police Department, reports that eight burglaries have occurred at residences on campus since the beginning of the 2007-2008 academic year, three of which have occurred since the start of the spring semester.

“The majority of the burglaries we’re seeing are not the result of forceful entry,” Bleckman says. “Individuals are literally leaving the door open for these crimes. They are crimes of opportunity, and that makes them difficult to solve.”

Most recently, a room in Residential College II was burglarized on March 31, and an estimated $300 in video game equipment was stolen. During previous burglaries, driver’s licenses and credit cards have been stolen, which can possibly leave the victim open to identity theft.

In addition to the residential burglaries, the Missouri S&T Police Department also reports a string of thefts involving vehicles. Bleckman says eight vehicles have been broken into this semester, half of which were located in the parking lot of Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall at the time of the theft. Again, the majority of the vehicles that were broken into were not locked or secured.

“Lock your doors, and don’t put items of value in the passenger compartment of the vehicle where they can be seen,” Bleckman says. “Put valuables in the trunk or take them inside your residence.”

Bleckman adds the vehicle thefts are not unique to the Missouri S&T campus, and the Rolla Police Department also is reporting a recent rise in vehicle break-ins.

Bleckman asks that anyone witnessing a crime on campus contact the Missouri S&T Police Department with information at 574-341-4300.

Take dining services survey

Missouri S&T is conducting a survey to understand your views and preferences regarding campus dining services. The survey has been developed with the help of Envision Strategies, an independent food service consulting firm, to assist in identifying ways in which the dining program can be improved. We believe that the opinions of the university community should be heard, which is why you are receiving this invitation to participate in this very important survey.

Please consider the time it takes you to respond (about 10-15 minutes) as an investment in the future of dining services at Missouri S&T. Your responses will be kept strictly confidential and will not be identifiable to you.

By participating in the survey, you will become eligible to win one of the following prizes:
• $50 gift certificate Missouri S&T Bookstore
• $50 gift certificate Missouri S&T Golf Course
• $20 gift card for Chartwells Dining Services
• $20 gift card for Chartwells Dining Services

Four winners will be selected randomly from those who complete the survey.

Official vehicles damaged at Missouri S&T Experimental Mine

At approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, a Missouri University of Science and Technology student found what appeared to be bullet holes in two vehicles at the university’s Experimental Mine. The shots were fired when the mine property was vacant, between 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, and 7:15 a.m. Friday, April 4. There were no injuries.

Gunshot damage to a third vehicle was discovered at approximately 4 p.m. Friday. The vehicle, which was driven off site at 7:15 a.m. Friday, was inspected for damage upon its return to the Experimental Mine.

The driver’s side and passenger’s side windows were shot out of the first vehicle, a black Ford Ranger pickup. A bullet passed through the second vehicle, a late model Chevrolet 2500 extended cab pickup, entering on the passenger’s side and exiting on the driver’s side. A bullet hole was found in the bed of the third truck, a 2000 F250 Ford, late this afternoon.

A bullet fragment was recovered at the scene approximately six feet from the driver’s side of the Chevrolet.
