The University Police has been notified of a recent fraud scheme that involves someone calling who claims to be with the Social Security Administration. The caller asks the victim to provide their Social Security Number so that their file can be pulled.

Employees have reported a recent scam in which a caller will claim to have discounted printer toners after verifying the employee’s name and job title. Without agreeing to purchase the toners or placing an order, the company may ship the items and an invoice. In one instance, the company name was Advanced Imaging Systems.

The scam involves someone supposedly from a foreign governmental agency contacting the recipient via phone and informing the intended victim that he or she violated the law in their county. The chamber encourages area companies not to advertise with this group. The company does not have a local business license and is not working with local schools. - No reputable company or organization will call you to tell you owe taxes or have an unpaid debt, such as electricity or telephone. No legitimate company will require you to send funds electronically or place funds on a pre-paid card to satisfy a debt. If in doubt, hang up the phone and call the police. Read More »
