The University Police has been notified of a recent fraud scheme that involves someone calling who claims to be with the Social Security Administration. The caller asks the victim to provide their Social Security Number so that their file can be pulled.

Beware printer scam

Employees have reported a recent scam in which a caller will claim to have discounted printer toners after verifying the employee’s name and job title. Without agreeing to purchase the toners or placing an order, the company may ship the items and an invoice. In one instance, the company name was Advanced Imaging Systems.

Beware of poster advertisement scam

The Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce warns the campus community that a group named Elite Designs is calling area businesses to sell advertisement space for athletic and football posters. The chamber encourages area companies not to advertise with this group. The company does not have a local business license and is not working with local schools. University Police has received a complaint of attempted fraud related to a telephone call from someone claiming to be with S&T’s police department with a “spoofed” phone number that appeared to be University Police’s number, 341-4300. University Police has received a complaint of attempted fraud related to unsolicited telephone calls. The department reminds the campus community to keep the following tips in mind when receiving a phone call or email:

  • No reputable company or organization will call you to tell you owe taxes or have an unpaid debt, such as electricity or telephone. No legitimate company will require you to send funds electronically or place funds on a pre-paid card to satisfy a debt. If in doubt, hang up the phone and call the police.
