University Police recently received reports of scams targeting students from scammers who claim to be employers at reputable companies. Scammers will use fraudulent links and email addresses that appear to be from legitimate companies. They ultimately “hire” the students but then send them counterfeit or stolen checks and ask the students to keep their salary and send back the remainder of the funds from the check.

The scam involves a caller who is supposedly representing a government agency, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Federal Reserve. As part of the scam, the caller tells the individual that an active warrant was issued for their arrest because of debt.
