Missouri S&T has received reports of a new telephone scam targeting our students. Callers impersonate an officer from the Rolla Police Department or the IRS and manipulate the caller ID to make the call appear to come from an official source.
IT security has reported these incidents to local FBI officials. Many of these scammers get contact information from social media sources.
Remember that con artists contact people through the mail, by telephone and over the Internet with only one objective — to separate you from your money. These thieves are very persuasive and use all types of excuses, explanations and offers to get you to send them money. Be careful about what you post on social media, be suspicious and never provide personal information.
If you receive a call like this, please report it to the University Police by emailing police@mst.edu or calling 341-4300.
