Long elected to IISE leadership position

Dr. Suzanna Long, chair and professor of engineering management and systems engineering, has been elected to a three-year term as technical vice president for the Institute for Industrial & Systems Engineers. She has previously held several offices for IISE sub-societies. Her term as technical vice president will begin Sunday, April 1.

Cudney recognized by ASQ for Six Sigma book

Dr. Beth Cudney, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, received the Philip B. Crosby Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ). She received the medal as co-author of a “distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of philosophy and application of the principles, methods or techniques of quality management.”

41 S&T faculty members honored for outstanding teaching

Forty-one faculty members have received the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2016-17. The winners were recognized at a ceremony in November. The Outstanding Teaching Award is given each year to faculty members by the Outstanding Teaching Award committee, which bases its selections on student evaluations.

Two talk disaster recovery at military engineers meeting

Dr. Suzanna Long and Dr. Steven Corns were the featured speakers at the monthly meeting of Fort Leonard Wood’s chapter of Society of American Military Engineers on Nov. 15 at the base. They presented, “Post-Disaster Supply Chain Interdependent Critical Infrastructure System Restoration Modeling: A Review of Data Necessary and Available for Modeling.”

Future NASA engineer drops some knowledge in music video

Dajae Williams, a senior in engineering management from St. Louis, raps about the quadratic equation in a new video. After graduating from Missouri S&T in December, Williams will work as a manufacturing engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California. She also wants to use her passion for hip hop to encourage other minority students to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering or math. Watch the video.

The Winter 2017 commencement ceremonies will feature student speakers. Undergraduate students were invited this fall to compete for the chance to become one of four speakers. The following individuals will present their speeches during their graduation ceremony Saturday, Dec. 16, in Gale Bullman Building:

Former engineering management chair Henry Sineath dies

Dr. Henry “Dr. Si” Sineath, a retired S&T faculty member and longtime Rolla resident, died Oct. 8, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was 95. After 25 years in industry, Sineath joined Missouri S&T in 1976 as a visiting professor of engineering management. During his tenure at S&T, he established the university’s packaging program, served as its director and endowed a fund to provide continued support for the program. In 1981, Sineath became the second chair of engineering management, following founding department chair Dr. Bernard Sarchet. He retired as professor emeritus in 1986.
