The Writing Center will hire undergraduate peer tutors to begin work in January 2016, and staff need your help in identifying qualified candidates. If you know any students who have strong writing and interpersonal skills, encourage them to apply. Applications from students in any discipline will be accepted. Ideal candidates expect to graduate no earlier than May 2017. Tutoring offers valuable educational and leadership experience in a relaxed but professional environment. Email the names of promising candidates to Jeanine Bruening by Friday, Oct. 30, and Writing Center staff will issue personal invitations to them.

Chancellor’s Leadership Academy (CLA) applications are due by noon Friday, Oct. 30. If you know any first year students or international students within their first three semesters, please encourage them to apply. CLA allows students to develop their leadership skills, connect with industry leaders, and build and manage their own service project. Students who wish to apply for CLA must submit an application and send their resume and cover letter to minerleader@mst.edu.

Curtis Laws Wilson Library will partner with Elsevier to host three workshops about Scopus and Mendeley on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Nikhil Joshi, an Elsevier trainer, will be on campus to show the ins and outs of research using Scopus and Mendeley. There will be three opportunities to learn about Elsevier products:

The RE-CAST University Transportation Center invites the campus community to attend a webinar at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in Room 312 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Charles Hanskat, executive director of the American Shotcrete Association, will present “Shotcrete for Repair and Rehabilitation of Highway Facilities.”

Physical facilities is resetting campus equipment due to a power outage that occurred on Sunday, Oct. 11. Campus buildings may have brief heating or cooling issues throughout the day. The Missouri S&T Solar House Team’s Nest Home is on display in Irvine, California, as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. The home is also up for the People’s Choice Awards. You can help the team by voting for the Nest Home to win the People’s Choice Award. The team finished the weekend in first place overall in the competition. Check the complete standings here.

Dr. Ian Ferguson, vice provost and dean of the College of Engineering and Computing since August 2014, has announced plans to step down from that role for personal and family medical reasons.
