Taylor inducted into the Missouri Mining Hall of Fame
Jimmie Taylor, supervisor at the Experimental Mine and part of the mining and nuclear engineering department for 23 years, was inducted into the Missouri Mining Hall of Fame during the Missouri Mine Rescue Association’s award banquet on Thursday, Oct. 1. He has been involved with mine rescue throughout his employment. Missouri S&T was the first university to establish a mine rescue team.

Dr. Kathleen Sheppard, assistant professor of history and political science, was invited to speak as part of the Centenary Celebrations for the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at University College in London on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Sheppard’s talk, titled “Professional Networks of Women: Margaret Murray’s Role in Archaeology,” highlighted Murray’s work in Malta and her training of her female students and colleagues.

Read More »Beetner named to the SIUE Hall of Fame
Dr. Daryl Beetner, chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering, was named to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville’s (SIUE) Alumni Hall of Fame. Beetner earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from SIUE in 1990. The school lists Beetner’s undergraduate accomplishments as a Presidential Scholar, a fellow of its Undergraduate Research Academy and a recipient of the SIUE Foundation Academic Excellence Award, along with his professional accomplishments.

Rachel Schneider, assistant teaching professor of English and technical communication, was asked to write a blog post for the American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies’ Graduate Caucus website. Schneider’s post focused on what you can do in your Ph.D. program to best prepare yourself for an academic career as a professor, from the perspective of someone who has recently graduated and found employment.

Dr. Jianmin Wang, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, and Dr. Guoqiang Liu, assistant research professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received the 2015 Chinese-American Professors in Environmental Engineering and Science (CAPEES) Best Paper Award, for their publication “Long-term low DO enriches and shifts nitrifier community in activated sludge,” which was published in 2013 in Environmental Science and Technology. Their research impacts sustainable wastewater treatment and reuse.

Dr. Shannon Fogg, chair and associate professor of history and political science, recently served as a historical consultant for the BBC One program “Who Do You Think You Are?” The program explores the genealogy of well-known individuals. The episode Fogg assisted with features the story of actress Jane Seymour’s ancestors, who were Polish Jews that fled the Nazis in France during World War II. The program first aired in the UK on Thursday, Aug. 20.

For the third year in a row, the student financial assistance (SFA) office has received the Missouri Department of Higher Education’s $25,000 Default Prevention Grant. The proposal was drafted and submitted by Sara Lewis, manager of SFA, which builds on work done for previous awarded grants that were administered by Sarah Baggett, manager of SFA, and Gena Boling, assistant director of SFA.

Dr. Edna M. Grover-Bisker, director of career opportunities and employer relations, won the Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration (CIEC) best poster award for her poster titled “Textbook Pages to Salary Wages: An Examination of the Relationship between Cooperative Education and Early Employment Outcomes.” The recognition and award will be presented during the awards ceremony at the 2016 CIEC in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016.
