Dr. Carla Bates, assistant teaching professor in business and information technology, earned her Ph.D. in information sciences and learning technology from the University of Missouri-Columbia this summer. Her achievement culminates a career of higher learning that began when she first joined Missouri S&T as a clerk typist in 1989. Read her story.

Wilkins discusses gaming in education as panelist

Barbara Wilkins, an instructional designer in educational technology, served as a panelist for a panel on the role of gaming in education during Gen Con 50 in Indianapolis in August. The group discussed gaming for students in elementary grades and through university levels, along with ways to promote student success and how gaming may enhance workplace skills. Gen Con 50 is the longest-running gaming convention in the world.

In the news: Aerospace & Defense Technology, Astronomy magazines

  • Research findings by Dr. Charles Wojnar, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are featured in the August 2017 issue of Aerospace & Defense Technology magazine. The article highlights Wojnar’s development of an experimental method for understanding solid propellant aging. His new method was picked up by the magazine after his paper, “Measuring Propellant Stress Relaxation Modulus Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer,” was published in the Journal of Propulsion and Power.   • Dr. Leslie Gertsch, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering, is quoted in a recent Astronomy article, “Could We Survive Without Our Planet?” The article, written by Abigail Beall, was published Sept. 18 on the magazine’s site, www.astronomy.com.

NSF grant goes to Medvedeva

Dr. Julia Medvedeva, professor of physics, recently received a $1.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF) program. Her co-principal investigators are Northwestern University researchers Dr. Robert P.H. Chang, professor of materials science and engineering, and Dr. Matthew Grayson, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science.
