Dr. Chengshan Xiao, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been inducted as a fellow into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is one of 52 new fellows to formally join the Canadian academy at an induction ceremony recently in Ottawa.

Ferguson named Royal Society of Arts Fellow

Dr. Ian Ferguson, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in June. The RSA — formally known as the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce — was established in 1754 in London to enrich society “through ideas and action.”

Campus committee meets with ACE advisor on internationalization efforts

Susan Sutton, an advisor on internationalization with the American Council on Education (ACE), visited Missouri S&T’s campus June 19. She met with campus leaders, including Chris Maples, interim chancellor, and Robert Marley, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. She also met with members of Missouri S&T’s internationalization committee.

  • Stephen Corns, associate chair of graduate studies, is featured in an Engineering.com article about Missouri S&T’s master’s degree in engineering management. The article, “Take the Lead Where Engineering and Business Intersect,” was published June 23. Embedded with the story is a video produced by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) about Missouri S&T’s engineering management and systems engineering department. The video features several faculty and a student, including Corns; Dr. Suzanna Long, department chair; Lizzette Perez-Lespier, a recent PhD graduate; Dr. Elizabeth Cudney, associate professor; Dr. Stephen Raper, associate professor; and Dr. Joan Schuman, assistant teaching professor.

World champs: Student team wins Mars rover competition

The Missouri S&T Mars Rover Design Team has won the 2017 University Rover Challenge, an international design competition where teams showcase potential next-generation Mars rovers.The team finished first among 35 collegiate teams at the University Rover Challenge (URC), held June 1-3 at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah. Two professors ranked among best in information systems field

Dr. Keng Siau and Dr. Fiona Nah are among the most prolific management information system researchers in the world, according to a University of Arizona study that assesses researchers based on their “h-index.” Siau is a professor and chair of business and information technology. Nah is a professor of business and information technology.

Oerther receives national environmental engineering award

Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received the The Frederick George Pohland Medal. Awarded jointly by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES), the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) and the Pohland family, the award recognizes Oerther for his “sustained and outstanding efforts to bridge environmental engineering research, education and practice.”

CEC names 10 students as Dean’s Ph.D. Scholars

Ten doctoral students in the College of Engineering and Computing have been named Dean’s Ph.D. Scholars in recognition of their scholarly excellence and research productivity. The award winners were nominated by professors in their home departments and honored at an end-of-semester campus reception in May.
